How to Make Sorcerer's Hats for the Harry Potter Themed Kids Birthday Party

What Harry Potter themed kid's birthday party would be complete without the requisite sorcerer's hat? Birthday parties traditionally include birthday hats anyway, so why not incorporate this Harry Potter sorcerer's hat into the party's activities.

Before setting up the materials for the sorcerer's hat at the party, it is a good idea for an adult to make the first one for the Harry Potter themed birthday party. By making one first, you can see how much preparation will need to be done in advance, for each hat. It will also give you an idea of how long it will take to complete the construction of the birthday hats.

Materials Needed to Make Sorcerer's Hats for the Harry Potter Themed Kids Birthday Party

This material list is for making one hat. Multiply by as many party-goers you are expecting.

1 piece of posterboard - cut to 12 inches by 18
half a yard of black felt
1 sheet of colored felt

Tools:

a hot glue gun
a pencil
a ruler
binder clips or large paper clips

Prepare Before Make the Sorcerer's Hats for the Harry Potter Themed Kids Birthday Party

Preparing the hats ahead of time will make this a more fun project for the partygoers. You will need to measure and make the hats, and cut out some accessories.

Party throwers (yes, parents, that means you) can construct the actual hats before the party. The most challenging aspect of making the hat is the measuring. You will need the posterboard, the pencil, a ruler, and your child to sit and be measured with the hat.

Draw a triangle on the posterboard, starting with a point at the top, like a pyramid. Each side of the triangle should measure 12 inches. The bottom of the triangle should measure 18 inches, which should be ample size for a child's head.

Before cutting out the triangle, change the bottom 18 line into a curved line, like an elongated "u." This will form the rounded part of the hat, the part that fits on the child's head. Try the hat on your child's head to adjust the measurements, before making the rest of the hat bases.

Once you have the right shape and size, use that flat posterboard as the template to cut the felt and the remaining pieces of posterboard (one for each party goer).

Next, hot glue the felt onto each hat. Use binder clips or paperclips along the bottom of each hat to encourage flat drying.

Once dry, sew the back of the hats together. Or, make holes in the back on each side, and secure together with a wide ribbon, laced down the hat, much like you would lace a shoe.

Optional: Also make holes on each side of the hat, above the ears. Tie a knot in a wide ribbon and lace it through. Do the same on the other side. This will enable the kids to secure the hats to their heads.

Another way the party thrower can prepare ahead of time for this party craft is to cut out sorcerer-themed shapes out of felt. Cut out moons, stars, planets, and other shapes that can be later glued onto the hats.
