How to Use Sound Recorder on Windows XP

Idalia Benavides
Do you like to record music from the radio? Do you like to record yourself or your kids doing funny noises? Well if you like recording anything at all, then now you can with Window's Sound Recorder program that comes installed on every Windows XP computer.

Sound Recorder will allow you to create your own music files that you can use to burn them onto a CD, to send them to someone via email, or to publish them online. The process of doing this is easy, and I will go through it all in this article.

1. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, then click on Sound Recorder to open it. If you do not find the program at this location, try going to your Search window and typing it in right there. That should bring it up; you can then click on it and launch it from there.

2. Once it's open, connect your microphone or headset onto your computer. If you do not have a microphone or a headset try recording anyways; sometimes computers have internal speakers and microphones, so you should attempt this just in case you're one of the lucky ones.

3. When you want to start recording all you need to do is click the red circle that will allow you to record up-to 60 seconds of audio.
Note: Once you have used up the 60 seconds, you can keep recording still by just clicking on the red circle again.

4. If you wish to save what you recorded, you can do so by going to File, Save As, naming the file, and then clicking Save. You can also save your file by just clicking on the X that appears on the top right hand corner and then clicking Yes when the Save or Don't Save message window pops up.

5. If you want to start your recording again without saving what you have, you can do this by going to File, hitting New, and then choosing No on the screen that comes up.

Tip: The Edit and Effects buttons on the top of the application will pull down with menus that will give you options to customize, edit, and mess with the properties available to you.

Now that you know how to record and save your recordings go ahead and try it. Some things you may want to try is to send a voice holiday greeting to all your email contacts, place a voice recording on your website or blog, or you can even let your kids record themselves singing or making weird sounds.
