How to Make Soy Milk from Scratch

Devon Bruce
Making your own soy milk is pretty simple and it's a lot cheaper than buying it from a store. Its also healthier because there are no additives; its just beans, water and some form of sweetener. That's it!

To make soy milk from scratch, you will need:

1 lb of soybeans (uncooked)
½ cup sugar (cane, white, brown...whatever works for you)
Around 1 quart of water
Vanilla, melted chocolate, pureed strawberries to taste (optional....this is if you want to add flavor)

You will also need the following equipment:

Soaking bowl
A blender
2 Pots (one for boiling the beans and the other for catching the milk)
Cheese cloth
Container for milk

Step 1: Soak the beans overnight. Make sure the beans are completely covered with water. The beans will get bigger because the beans will absorb the water.

Step 2: Blend the beans. I recommend one cup beans to 2 ½ to 3 cups of water. Repeat this step until all the beans are blended. You don't want to blend too many beans at once or else they will not be blended properly. The consistency should be a pulpy liquid.

Step 3: Boil the beans in a pot. Make sure to stir frequently so it wont stick to the bottom of the pan and to make sure it does not boil over. Once it is at a rolling boil, add your sweetener and additional flavor (I like to add honey). Boiling the beans takes around 20-30 minutes.

Step 4: Attach the cheese cloth to the second pot and pour the bean mixture through it. The liquid inside the pot is the soy milk. Make sure to squeeze as much milk as you can. Once you have squeezed all the milk, transfer the milk into your containers. After the liquid has cooled, transfer the milk to your refrigerator. Enjoy!

Tips:

When the beans are boiling, you will see froth forming. Just take a spoon and remove it.

You can use the leftover pulp for burgers, chili, dressing etc...

You can use less water if you want richer soy milk. Just keep in mind you will end up with less and it wont be as easy to work with.

This will not taste like store bought soy milk because there are no additives. You may want to add more sugar. Also, try experimenting with different flavors.
