How Do I Speed Up My Computer?

Realtimer
1. Identify the size and capacity of your computer hard disk (Click the Start Button, Click on "My Computer" and then Right Click on "Drive C" and then select "properties"). This displays the actual size of your hard disk. Always be conscious of the size of your hard disk to know what Application Software program to install. For example, a PC with 5 gigabyte capacity can accommodate a few programs like the Microsoft Office applications (Ms-Word, Ms-Excel, Ms-PowerPoint and the likes) but will not be able to install heavy programs like the Adobe Illustrator, PageMaker, AutoCAD and CorelDraw.

2. Your computer system could be slow due to some stored unwanted temporary files (like those in the recycle bin and the internet temporary files). In this case, it's very necessary you regularly perform disk clean up like you do to your house when need be. From the previous direction given in number 1 above, go to "My Computer" and locate Hard Disk Drive usually labeled "C". If you were unable to locate it, why not keep placing your mouse pointer and relaxing for some seconds until the label displays to indicate the drive's name. Right Click on the Hard disk (C, D or E if your hard disk is partitioned or shared) and select by clicking on "Properties" to bring out the Hard disk Property dialog box. Click on "Disk cleanup" and wait for disk cleanup to generate the contents to free up in your computer. Click on the check boxes to activate the files to be deleted. To retain a particular file group, click on its check box to deactivate (i.e. to remove the good mark in green colour). Click "OK" to start cleanup. The operating system prompt on the screen "Are you sure you want to perform this action"; then click "yes" as option. This will automatically run to erase permanently the entire temporary files in your computer though may take some minuets depending on the size of files being removed by the OS. Finally click "OK" to exit the Hard Disk Property dialog box.

3. The Random Access Memory (RAM) is one most important thing to enhance the speed of your computer. If your computer is very slow, check to RAM size (i.e. Right Click on "My Computer" on the Desktop Environment and then click on "Properties". On the My Computer Property dialog box, the RAM size is displayed below it). For example, if I have a slow PC with 128MB of RAM, I have to buy more RAM like extra 128MB RAM to make it 256MB of RAM which is double strength. The RAM is like a Circuit Card Slot. To simply install the RAM yourself, check about installing RAM on the internet or call a computer Technician to assist you.

4. The Processor (Micro chips) /Motherboard is the most vital issues on computer speed. In the same vein, the Motherboard is the most expensive part of the System Unit. A Pentium (I) PC cannot operate at the same speed with a Pentium (II) PC. Do you need a faster PC, then you go for a high-speed board say Pentium (IV) or Pentium (M).

Very good article. Only one caution. Remember that, somtimes, during the free trial period offered by manufacturers for some software, temporary files are used by the trial software. I once deleted all my temporary files and found that the trial software I downloaded did not work properly any more. I had to re-download the software.
