How to Speed Up Your Computer in One Day

Greg Smith
It's an unstoppable phenomenon. It happens to every computer. It doesn't matter what brand, how fast or how much memory you have. All computers have performance slow down after a few months of being powered on. It ages like a human, only at a pace that is 15x that of how we grow old. That sonic speed computer has turned into a slow and steady turtle. We look to those who are supposed to be "experts" when it comes to computers to find out what we can do. "How can I speed up my computer?" Although the amount of factors that contribute to a slow computer are to numerous to list, I'll give you a couple of tips to help speed up your pc in less than a day.

You're computer is a logical thinking device. One of its goals is to keep up with everything you throw at it. It does not make a decision as to what is needed or what is not. It only knows what you program it to know. Because of this, if you have a program set to load and be processed, even though you haven't used it in years, it will still load and process that program. Over the years, you can imagine how much extra load you have placed on your pc's memory because it becomes cluttered.

Also, the information is placed into different pockets of your memory. When this happens, and the memory is not congruent (right next to) to each other, it is said to be fragmented. Windows then has to re-fragment the information (search for the next memory block and put it in order) which will bog down your processor. So what is the key? Defragment your disk. You should defragment your disk at least once every week. And you don't even have to spend any money to do this, just go to Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragment, and let it run until it completes. This will lead to at least a 30% increase in speed.

Another tip you can use is to go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you are not using any longer. Most of these programs have process that are attached to your process and are unnecessary. If you find that you have programs that you haven't used in 2 or 3 months, or that you've completely forgotten about, remove them.

Not only will this help ease the load on your computer speed, but you'll also find that you will free up valuable space on your computer's hard drive.
