Did you know that you really can speed up your metabolism? I bet you're asking what is metabolism and for heavens sakes why should I want to speed up my metabolism? Simplistically speaking your metabolism will determine how quickly your body will burn calories when you are inactive and this will affect weight gain or weight loss.

You may have noticed that it seems so much easier to gain weight as you have gotten older, but you do not think that your diet has changed that much from previous years. So what is everybody doing wrong that they are able to gain this extra weight at a blink of an eye?

As you age your metabolism is slowing down so that you are not burning the same number of calories that you once did. This is why you want to speed up your metabolism so you do not gain so much weight. As we age we need to watch our diet a little closer and increase some of our exercise activities. Both of these ideas are an excellent goals to strive for.

Take a good look at your diet. I am not just talking about whether you are currently dieting, but what is your typical type of food intake for an average week? Specifically do you pay attention to whether you maintain a balanced diet, eating all the proper foods that your body needs to be healthy and strong? Just set aside a couple of dollars on your grocery money to include some of the healthy foods that you know you need.

Let's talk about what some of the healthy foods are that you should be including in your diet to increase your metabolism so that you can burn fat at a more desirable rate. Try to work into your diet some foods that rank higher in potassium.

The purpose of potassium is to keep the cells in your body hydrated. If your cells are not hydrated it will cause your metabolism to slow down. Speed up your metabolism with dried apricots, eat baked potatoes with the skin on and try to eat some bananas and honeydew melon. Chilled fruit tastes especially delicious during the spring and summer months.

Some other foods that do provide your body with some important vitamins, minerals and even anti-oxidants are broccoli, walnuts, carrots, tuna and blueberries. None of which are that expensive if you just eat small portions of them.

An excellent source of antioxidants can be found in green tea. Green tea is filled with metabolism boosters that encourage your body to burn calories faster, burning fat and helping you lose weight. It is not that expensive and it is a great way to stay hydrated.

Try to develop more muscle in your overall body structure through exercising. The hidden benefits of being in good shape are that muscles demand and burn more calories quickly. Repeated exercise during the day will continually jump start your metabolism.

Here are some really simple suggestions for adding some daily exercise into your routine. Maybe you work in a high rise building, why not take the stairs half of the time instead of the elevator? You will feel rejuvenated and think clearer before you're next meeting. Do you have a dog? Get down on the floor with it and just rough house together. You will speed up your metabolism and make your pet a happy camper. Dogs just love to go for a walk and the fresh air will do you good too.

Everybody knows that when the gardening season rolls around you can pick up some more exercise by cleaning out the plants from last years garden and preparing the garden for the new season. It is a really good way to burn calories and increase your metabolism.

Are you one of those people that say every year I am going to put in the most beautiful flower garden, but you do not or you never get around to it? Now is the time to make a point of planting your flower garden and reap all the rewards. You can speed up your metabolism just by working in your flower garden.

All these ideas are things that you can do when the weather is particularly nice and reap the benefits from them one way or another. You can speed up your metabolism the old fashioned way by putting yourself on an exercise program, where you specifically set aside time, say 30 minutes a day to do some real exercises. If you do, take it slow if your really out of shape.

You can speed up your metabolism, lose weight and generally feel better by eating the right foods and increasing your physical activity on a daily basis.
