How to Make Spiky Text in Photoshop

Add a Spike Effect the Easy Way

Peter R
Step#1:
- Create your new document for the new design , just make sure that there is a lot of extra empty spaces in your design .
- Fill your first layer with a black color as a background , or chose your special color as you want . I prefer black for a background in our case .
- Now in the middle of your design start adding your text , make sure that is in the center of your design , have a clear appearance and a little bit of font style on it like a lit bit of sharp edges or something .
- If your text in not in the center , just select your text layer and move it with the Move tool , or with the move tool selected Click Ctrl+A to select all the design then click on Align horizontal centers , and then click on Align vertical centers icon in the Photoshop top bar .

Take a look at the attached image .

Step#2:
In this step will make 3 main actions to prepare the text to the next level .
- Duplicate the text layer to have an original layer for the text , so you can use it in case of any thing happened .
- First Restrize your text layer , Right click on you text layer and select " Resterize Type ".
- Second we need to duplicate the new Resterized text layer 4 times , there is many ways to do this , the easiest way is to drag the layer to create new layer icon in your layers pallet 4 times ,

Now we have 5 copies of the text layer

Take a look at the attached image .

Step#3:
Now this is going to be a little hard to follow so try to keep it easy by follow one step a time , we will apply a wind filter to 4 layers above the original :
- In the second layer , copy 2 : Apply Filter>Stylize>Wind , in the direction field choose From the right .
- In the third layer , copy 3 : Apply Filter>Stylize>Wind again , but this time in the direction field choose From the left .
- Now it gets more tricky …. In the forth layer , copy 4 : Before applying the filter ….. we will transform the layer Edit>Transform>90° CCW ,
Now apply Filter>Stylize>Wind again , this time in the direction field choose From the left ,
then after applying the filter apply this Edit>Transform/90° CW to get the text back to it's initial position .
- In the fifth layer , copy 5 : the same as the previous one but with one change to the filter ,
transform the layer Edit>Transform>90° CCW ,
Now apply Filter>Stylize>Wind again , this time in the direction field choose From the Right ,
then after applying the filter apply this Edit>Transform/90° CW .

Take a look at the attached images for this step .

Step#4:
The fun part start now ,
- Move the original text layer " ______ COPY " to the top off all layers in the layer pallet.
- Ctrl+CLICK on the original text layer " ______ COPY " , now your text is highlighted .
- Now Go to Select>Modify>Contract , and choose 1 px for the "contracted by" field .
- Click D to change your foreground color to black , Then Go to Edit>Fill and choose foreground from the " USE " list to fill the highlight with black .

Take a look at the attached images for this step .

Step#5:
- Merge All the edited layers , but don't merge the top one which is the original text ,
you can merge by selecting the layer and click Ctrl+e to merge it with the previous layer and so on .

Now feel free to add some blinding option to the merged layer , in my case I added some light bevel and emboss , and may be some outer glow and some very light inner glow , also you can add you special touch to the design , change the color using an adjustment or filters , play with font colors , add filters to the text ... feel free to add any thing make your design look a life and special .

Take a look at My final design .….

Until next time , have fun .
