How to Spray Paint Your Walls

Whether you are a hippie or an artist or you just want to try something new, spray painting your walls can be one of the most exciting forms of decorating there is! Before you begin, you must take some precautions to make sure that you do not have a fine mist of paint all over your belongings. Creative decorating ahead!

Landlord Approval. Different apartments and houses have different rules attached to them. Your landlord or lady may have strict procedures in place with regard to property maintenance. On the other hand, if they repaint the walls and put in new carpet every time a new tenant moves in, you may be in luck! Ask your landlord or lady for approval to paint your walls and if they say yes, pick out some nice bright, high-gloss colors.

Protection and Air Flow. Unless you really enjoy getting high off of paint fumes, you will need to take breaks from your painting every ten minutes or so. Having windows and doors open for air flow is more conducive to your health, but I must give you a strong warning! If there is too much air flow or breeze, the paint spray will not fall to the tarp on the floor but will circulate throughout your home and cover everything with tiny paint flecks! Keep the air flow light or simply available if needed, but do not have a wind blowing through your place. Get a nice, large, cheap artist's tarp from the store and cover everything next to the wall on which you will be painting, including the floor.

If You are Not a Graffiti Artist. You may not have the immediate talent to spray paint your walls without some of the paint running down the wall to the floor below. Always have your tarp taped to, or at least shoved up against, the wall along the entire length. Next, make a basic outline of what you would like to do on the wall, be it pictures or words. This will give you an idea of how much room you need and whether you will be going around a corner if the art is too large. After that, make a more defined outline with short, light strokes. If you go too heavy or too strong, the paint will dribble down the wall. To finish, let the outline dry for a minute, and then fill it in with short, light strokes.

Finished Product. Many people might be tempted to allow the graffiti on their walls to take up too much clout in the room. The key to tasteful decorating after spray painting your walls is to ignore it. Arrange your rooms in clean, simple lines, keep your furniture and all of your carpets and floors thoroughly clean and try to not have too many knick-knacks lying around, because they are distracting and make the place look too busy. Keep warm homey lamps to light up dark corners and the painted walls will take on a life of their own!
