How to Spring Clean Your House

Amy Stepp
With Spring finally arriving it is time to clean out our homes and make a fresh start this season. I know the one thing I just adore is when Spring finally rolls around I am able to open up the windows and just let some fresh air in the home. It gives my house this clean air smell and nothing can beat it considering we were cooped up for so long during the Winter months. Below you will find a step by step guide on how to Spring clean your own home.

Step One:
Do not tackle the whole house at one time. Each room will take you around 2 to 4 hours to clean so you will want to make sure you do only one room a day. I would suggest to pick the largest room to do first because by the end of the week when you have to clean the bigger room, your heart just really is not into it.

Step Two:
In the room start with the ceiling fans. Make sure you clean both side and also pledge them in case they are wooden blades. You will then need to also make sure you switch the direction of the blades for the Spring and Summer months. The switch should be up for Fall and Winter and down for Spring and Summer. Do not forget the ceiling needs a good dusting as well. Just go over them with a duster and shake the dust onto the floor.

Step Three:
Wipe the walls down with a duster. If you have wallpaper on them, then take a small bucket with a mixture of half water and half Lysol All Purpose cleaner. This will not only get rid of the dirt, but it will cut out the germs and also leave a fresh smell.

Step Four:
Window treatment time. We all hate to do windows that is why we wait until Spring cleaning time to do them. However just follow along and your window time will be cut in half. Wash all curtains. Try to have this do so before hand to allow them to dry and become wrinkle free. If you have blinds you can easily take them down and wash them. If it is a nice day outside, then leave them outside to dry. Next, just take the same mixture of Lysol all purpose cleaner and water and wash the window. Follow up with a Windex treatment on the glass and put everything back in place. Do not forget between the window and the screen going outside on the window sill to clean that with the mixture we mixed up. That section will be very dirty because it has weathered all the elements during the Winter months.

Step Five:
Baseboards are next. My best plan is to put everything in the room into the middle of the room and then get the same mixture of Lysol and water and scrub the baseboards. Take a butter knife and run it along the baseboards to remove extra dust that is caked on the bottom.

Step Six:
Vacuum down all furniture. Make sure you get in between cushions, and underneath and the backside of the furniture. If you are in your bedroom, make sure you vacuuming both sides of the mattress and then flip the mattress over and then top to bottom.

Step Seven:
If your furniture is wooden, it is time to polish them with pledge. Make sure you go in the directions of the woods grain.

Step Eight:
Vacuuming the floor where the furniture will be placed back at. After you vacuumed those spots it is time to replace the furniture where it is suppose to go. Then vacuum the rest of the room.

That is pretty much it. It can be as simple as you want it, however if you are a neat freak then the detail can rain on. However, I do still have some tips for you to do when it comes to the cleaning.

Tips:
- If you own a fireplace, this is the time to clean it out and close the damper!
- Wash before time all your pillows, sheets, and blankets.
- Rearranging a room can bring life back to your room and also make you feel better.
- Do not forget to get behind the refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer. These items are easy to forget about because they are so heavy to move.
