How to Make Squirrel Repellent for Your Trees at Home

Alicia Bodine
A squirrel is actually a rodent from the family Sciuridae. Squirrels are often seen near trees where they can find nuts to eat, as well as shelter from the elements. If you have trees on your property, you may begin to have a squirrel problem. Squirrels may tear up the bark of a tree for nesting material, eat tender young bark, and eat any fruit that is on the tree. You don't want to kill these beautiful creatures, so a homemade repellent is the best solution.

You will need the following items:

2 tbsp. cayenne pepper
1 qt. hot water
Pot
Cheesecloth
Spray bottle
1 tsp. horticultural oil

Follow these steps to make your homemade squirrel repellent:

Step 1:

Place your cayenne pepper into a pot of hot water. Let it sit until the water completely cools.

Step 2:

Mix the two ingredients together and then strain with a piece of cheesecloth.

Step 3:

Place the strained mixture into an empty spray bottle.

Step 4:

Add the horticultural oil and mix one final time.

Step 5:

Spray the homemade squirrel repellent all over the base of the trees you want to protect.

Tips:

If you don't have a cayenne pepper, you can substitute a jalapeno pepper.

Warnings:

This squirrel repellent will only last until it rains. Then you will need to reapply it.
