How to Make a Stained Glass Pedestal Cake Stand

Pam Parent
Stencil the glass cake stands with a kitchen theme, or they can be made with a holiday theme. The stained glass cake stand will add beauty to any kitchen or dining room, and they make a great one-of-a-kind designer gift. I found it was easiest to use smaller stencils for this project because they were easier to maneuver.

Stained Glass Pedestal Cake Stand

Supplies:

Glass pedestal cake stand
Glass Effect Gels in black and various colors
Small putty knife
Kitchen or holiday-themed small stencils
Paper towels
Paint tape

Directions:

1. When stenciling the stain glass design on the pedestal cake stand, I usually do the entire glass cover and the pedestal of the plate for an added designer touch. Place the stencil on the cover where you would like the design to begin. Secure the stencil with the paint tape. If it is a more intricate stencil, place the the stencil to the cake stand top, then carefully fold it so extends from the top to the side of the cover. Make sure the stencil is secure so it won't move when painting. Fill in the first part of the stencil with the glass gel tube. Take the tube of gel and gently squeeze a little to the center of the part being painted, then fill it in using the tip of the gel tube. Take the putty knife and spread the gel so that the stencil is completely covered and evenly spread out. You could also use an old knife to do this. Wipe knife and tip of the glass gel tube with a paper towel when done. Repeat this step until the first stencil design is done.

2. Carefully remove the stencil, and wipe the stencil clean. Allow this first stenciled section to dry for approximately 4 to 6 hours in a room that doesn't have direct sunlight and is room temperature. When it has completely dried, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the stained glass design is completely stenciled on the top of the cake stand cover, cake plate and pedestal.

3. Once the entire pedestal cake stand is completely stenciled and dry, it is time to outline the stained glass design. Outline the edges of the entire stain glass design throughout all pieces with the black glass gel. This gives the piping for the stained glass and gives it a realistic look. Allow the piping to dry for at least 6 hours.

4. Once the stained glass design is completed, I also let the pedestal cake stand sit for another 48 hours to make sure it is settled and completely dried. If you display the stained glass pedestal cake stand to early, colors made fade or crack.

Care

The glass gel says it is suppose to be dishwasher safe, but I recommend to spot clean with a damp cloth. This will keep the stained glass pedestal cake plate in its best condition or any other piece of glass you use this method on.
