Faith, like in American society plays a role in this show. The team constantly battled the question of 'false gods' or questioning of faith period. Americans have many different beliefs and do question their faith as well. A question of proof is prominent in the show as well in some views in American society today. The show showed many aspects of this on several episodes.
The question of culture came into play a lot in the series. Daniel Jackson, a character on the show, would learn about cultures, teach other cultures and react based on their customs. America has many cultures and many customs we celebrate. As a whole, America is one of the largest diverse cultures in the world. Like Daniel Jackson on SG1, Americans like to learn about different cultures, are curious on what customs are present and often more than not may celebrate several of this customs.
Another aspect that is similar to the show and American society is that they try to make alliances with foreign relations. In episodes where they meet this new society for the first time the team tries to understand what they are, what they have to offer and ways in which they can help them. This is somewhat like foreign policy here. As America's president goes from different countries to countries, he tries to work out deals and make relationships better with that particular country.
Politics play a role on the show and they do in American society as well. There is red tape when it comes to certain things that the program can do. They care constantly caught in a battle between the President's pressure and whether or not they are morally right. Many people in the United States deal with the same issues. Whether or not we should believe a politician to be right or will it go against our moral concerns?
The questioning of assistance to other planets is something the show showed as well. They would go through the stargate and land on a new planet. Once there they would find a conflict and try to assist the race of people that were there. At times going against protocol. There are men and woman right at this time that do the same thing from the United States. They assist other countries via as a goodwill ambassador, military, peace missions, education and so much more.
Overall Stargate SG1 is a lot like American society. Perhaps we don't go through wormholes, well if we did the mass public doesn't know, but the show brings forth topics in every episode and movie that Americans live with everyday.

Post a Commentagreed, one of or maybe the best show ever.
I agree with you that SG1 reflects much of what happens in American Society. Questioning of faith, politics, etc. Thought provoking article.
Thank you.
