How to Start Your Blog

A Powers
The Internet has become an expansive, all-inclusive community. Social sites gave us the ability to connect with each other through messages and photo-sharing. But you may want to take online expression to the next step by opening a blog. Blogs are websites that organize small articles that you've written about your life or interests. Blogging gives you more opportunity to share in a way that's easy and fun.

Before you rush to a blog provider, it's smart to take the time to answer a few questions: What will your blog be about? Who will your readers be? If you're writing for friends and family, your thoughts and opinions are sufficient content. But if you want to have a large readership, a more targeted topic is best. Consider writing about your hobby to attract others with the same interests. Follow current events with your own twist, or document a project you've adopted. If you're stumped, make a list of things you enjoy. Then take a look at several blogs to get an idea of what others are doing.

I recommend writing out a few posts before beginning your blog. You may find yourself changing direction. That's ok. Find your voice and get a handle on your writing style. Some topics are great for single articles, but don't provide enough fodder for a blog. Perhaps you can use that topic for a few posts within a larger topic. For example, if you like pizza but find you can't write more than five or ten posts, consider writing on Italian food, or kid-friendly food.

There are many websites that host blogs. Take a look at several to get an idea of the services and tools they offer. There are so many things you can do with your blog: customize its look, embed video clips and music, link to news sites and schedule future posts. Most sites are free, so you can sign up for an account without committing long-term. Take an hour or two to explore the site, familiarizing yourself with the site's features. Upload your posts and play with the look of your blog.

Now that you have a design you like, a topic you enjoy and a site to host your writing, you're officially a blogger. Post regularly with new and interesting information and watch your readership grow. You can use your blog to make new friends, advertise your business or drum up interest in your favorite cause. No matter what your blog looks like or what its content is, you'll find that it's a fun and productive hobby.
