How to Start a Business on a Shoestring Budget

Starting a Business with a Small Budget

L J Pearce
Starting a business doesn't have to cost you the earth. If you are looking to start up your own business but think you don't have enough money then think again. Work from home, and home based businesses can all be started on realistic and affordable budgets.

Businesses can be started on budgets as small as £50.00. For example you could start a pet sitting, or even baby sitting business on less than this as all you would need is to get some flyers or business cards produced, get them out there and hey presto a low cost business.

Working and sticking to a shoestring budget is all about compromise and research, what are necessities for your business to get off the ground and what are luxuries. For example the brand new laptop you have budgeted for might be more of a luxury than the market research you have budgeted for which is needed - so you can find out where your target market is and what they want and need for you.

Starting a business on a small budget is all about watching your costs from day one. Draw up a budget of all the things you think you need, and things you definitely need for your business. Be sure to cover and include such things as marketing/promotional materials, stationery, as these small things could just make or break your new business. If people don't know you exist how are you going to make your business work?

Now, look at your newly drawn up budget. Are there any areas where you can cut your costs or possibly eliminate them altogether. For example could you do your own book-keeping for a while until you can afford an accountant. Can you work from your home instead or getting premises? And could you rope in family and friends to help you instead of hiring staff? Trimming costs in the early stages will allow you to see what is necessary for your new business and what is not.

As you can see starting a business can be done on a shoestring, if not miniscule budget, as long as you are prepared to put in the work, conduct your market research and focus on reaching your target market.

Of course I know that business ideas and opportunities such as starting a restaurant, a day care centre or similar business could not be started on a shoestring budget, however, if you are looking at setting up one of these I am sure you could find ways to save money and trim your costs before you start.
