How Can You Start Eating Healthy Foods?

Stacy Stehle
Our current eating patterns have been years of habit. You will find a lot of people in this day and age that have grown up with fast food because it was easy, convenient and of course fast. Years later we are seeing what processed foods are doing to our bodies and it is not a good thing.

If you think back years and years ago to your grandparent and great grandparents, they lived off of non-processed foods. Most of them were able to live long and healthy lives.

Turning our unhealthy eating patterns into healthy ones can be very challenging. Most of us have been eating this way for years and years. Why is it important to eat healthy? It helps our bodies function properly and leads to a better lifestyle. When we feel better, we can do more and live a prosperous life.

What tips can you use to start eating healthy foods?

First, this is a process and it will take time. If you are able to make small changes before you know it, you will feel better and find that this is easy to do. You want to set yourself up for success!

If you plan your menu in advance it saves you time and also frustration of what you want to make. You can save even more time by preparing your chicken and lean meats on the weekend for that week.

You will want to stay away from "instant" foods like rice and boxed meals because most of the time the fiber is removed from these foods making it instant but not so healthy.

Replace your soda with tea or water. Add a lemon, lime or orange slices for flavor. Green tea is the best and you can still get some caffeine from it.

Create Ziploc bags of vegetables that you can take with you or keep in the fridge at work when you are hungry. They will fill you up and are a better choice than the vending machine.

Pre-cut fruit and mix them together to make a fruit salad. You can also just carry fruit with you in your bag or purse and pull it out when you want a snack.

Another great snack is natural nuts like almonds and walnuts. They are packed with good fat.

When choosing grains you want to stay away from white. These types of breads and grains are void of nutrients. Choose whole grain. They are packed with fiber and make you feel full so you don't eat so much.

Fill up with good protein sources like salmon, tofu, chicken and lean meats. They have less saturated fat, which is what you want to stay away from.

Overall, if you are able to start small and replace unhealthy snacks with fruits and veggies and then move in to making healthier choices on lunch and dinner foods, you will find that eating healthy is not so hard. You are not only improving your health but adding years onto your life.
