How to Start a Family Oriented 4-Wheeling Competition

Michael Robinson
The best 4-wheeling competitions around the country started out in peoples backyards with a group of friends just out to have fun. The first thing to do is get a group of people together and start brainstorming what kind of events you want in your competition. There are many events that can be held within a single competition. Dirt drag racing, up hill drag racing, time trails, rock crawls and frame twister ,some to name a few, that can make a competition fun for the whole family.

On November 29th, 2009 I was able to compete in the first K-5 Challenge in Garden Valley California. The competition was put together by a group of people that wanted to start a monthly competition that would involve the entire family. There were two main events in the competition, the uphill dirt drag and the time trial. The competition was held on private property and was organized very well. The day involved the competitors showing off each others rigs, BBQ and of course the competitions. Vehicles involved ranged from stock to mild trail rigs that included daily drivers. Everyone had a great time and the winners were able to take home trophies for their wins!

Many of you are reading this thinking that you do not have the area to create such a competition but that's where you can get creative. There is a large amount of open land that can be wheeled on in the mountains that surround the Sacramento Valley. In addition to the mountains there is a great off-road park located off Highway 50 called Prairie City State Vehicular Recreational Area. This is a great location for groups to compete in events that are already set-up for competition.

Now you're probably thinking about the cost of the trophies, well they are free!! The best trophy is one of sentimental value! You can take vehicle parts that have been damaged on previous events or donated by the people involved, to create trophies that to pass on to the new winner every time a competition is held. The name of the winners can be etched into the base and passed on until the year is over! So don't forget to save all those broken vehicle parts, you never know when you might need them.

Lastly for the BBQ, cost can get expensive but not if everyone lends a hand. There are a couple ways you can fund the competition's BBQ either charge a small amount per event entered, $5, or have everyone sign-up and do a potluck style BBQ. Either way it will be great fun for the entire family. As always you can e-mail me with any questions regarding the start up of your own event or for a list of events that currently include the Sacramento Area.
