Almost everyone has a parent or grandparent who has a special spot, a chest, a closet, an old box, filled with general gifts, wrappings, and cards for any occasion. It's easy to start and maintain a "Gift Closet," and it can definitely be an asset when you're invited to a party last minute or you find that you've forgotten an associate's birthday.

The first thing to consider when starting a Gift Closet is space. If you have an actual closet or wardrobe with free space, then you're set. However, if you live in an apartment or a small house, space can be much more limiting. Never fret, though, there are plenty of ways to store gifts outside the classic closet. An old chest at the foot of the bed can make a beautiful addition to any bedroom, but if you don't think you'll be able to fill it, then perhaps a storage ottoman would be a better choice. Both would blend in nicely with any room and provide a place where gifts will not be easily damaged. Also, plastic storage containers can protect against dampness and pests, but they don't blend into your décor as well unless they fit under a bed or into a cabinet.

After you've determined how much space you have available and what you'll be using as a storage device, it's time to consider acquiring the basics. The good thing about a Gift Closets is that you're not required to buy everything at once. You have time to shop around for the lowest prices and pick up clearance items that you might need in the future, like inspirational cards or out of season gift bags. If you don't have the space for rolls of wrapping paper, keep an eye out for folded squares of wrapping paper. Other than a small assortment of bags (including a wine bottle bag) and wrapping paper, you might want shop for confetti, wrapping tissue, and ribbon. Have a spare roll of gift tape and a pair of scissors in your Gift Closet as well.

Now that you have wrappings, cards, and the necessary tools, it's time to acquire gifts. You may have a few items already, things that you've either never used or gifts that you didn't find useful. There are also a few basic gifts to keep in your Gift Closet. One of the easiest gifts to give is stationary. A matching stationary set is something everyone on your list can use and work associates won't mind receiving as a belated birthday gift. Inspiration journals or inspirational books are also easy items to find on clearance that will make perfect gifts for men or women. Scarves, basic jewelry, and manicure/pedicure kits all make great general gifts as well. However, if you purchase perfume/lotions sets or makeup sets, you must be prepared to give them out within a short amount of time since these items will eventually go out of date.

What you should avoid collecting in your Gift Closet are gift cards with expiration dates and calendars/planners that may or may not be used within the allotted year. You should also avoid anything personalized or not generic enough. Also, trendy kids items may not be good choices for your Gift Closet; Barbie may be in this season, but by Spring, Bratz may be the new tween trend.

If you keep your Gift Closet in mind when you see a great sale, you'll find yourself always stocked for any gift-giving occasion.
