Homeschool laws in California are pretty fuzzy at best. While it is perfectly legal to homeschool in California and restrictions are minimal, there are stillrequirements that must be met. Here are answers to some of the most common questions for homeschooling in California.

What is the first step for homeschooling in California?

The first thing you need to do when deciding to homeschool in California is to decide which homeschooling option you will use. The 4 options for homeschooling in California are:

Establish your home as a private school. In doing so, you must file a electronic private school affidavit (PSA) and withdraw your children from school requesting their school records. Alternately, your child may be enrolled in an existing private home school in California.

Enroll in a Private school that offers independent study (PSP). This generally allows the parent to remain the teacher while the private school handles all administrative matters of the school.

Use an independent study program through a public school (keeping your status as a public school student).

Use the tutorial option in which a parent with a valid California Teacher credential my teach her child, or the parent may hire a credentialed tutor.

How do I find curriculum for my homeschooled child.

If you use a PSP or Independant study program, they may provide your curriculum. Otherwise, you should network with other homeschoolers to find out what curriculum worked for them. Also attend a homeschool conference that has vendor halls, where you can look through different curriculum and discuss it with the vendor.

Do I need to test my homeschooler in California?

Testing is not mandatory in California. It is available, however, to parents who choose to assess their child's progress. There are tests you can order to use in your home (FLO.org), or you can take advantage of a testing service. Also, certain achievement tests may be required for college entry.

What do I need to teach my homeschooled child in California?

Homeschoolers need to follow laws set for California private schools which requires English, math, science, social studies, fine arts, health, and phys ed are taught. Additional subjects are required for students in grades 7-12. These subjects are detailed in California Education Code §51210 and §51220.
