Get Your Contractors License
The first step to owing your own construction company is getting your contractors license in the state in which you live. You must have a contractors license to work in your area of expertise whether it is plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, etc. If you do not have your contractors license you will be limited on the amount and type of work that you perform unless you are simply helping out a homeowner that is his own contractor.
Get Your General Contractors License to Start Your Own Construction Company
Eventually you will want to grow your business and then you will need to become a general contractor. You must take a test, prove experience and pay the fees to become a general contractor just like you did when you first got your contractors license, but instead of focusing on just one field, you will need to know about all aspects of construction.
Register Your Business to Start Your Own Construction Company
Visit your local county recorders office to file a fictitious business name statement. You will need to file even if you are using your own name as your company name. Once you have filed and paid the fees, you will be able to use this paperwork to open up your first company bank account.
While you are at the county recorders office, you will want to ask them about the current laws and regulations regarding contractors so that you can comply with insurance and bonding and any other licenses or certifications that may be needed.
Advertise to Start Your Own Construction Company
Get the word out that you have started a new construction company. Tell your family and friends. Print up business cards to pass out. Advertise every where that you can afford to, especially in the yellow pages and on the internet. You may also want to place an ad in your local newspaper.
Bid Jobs Fairly
Bid jobs fairly and you will get the business that you deserve. Explain to your customers that there is more to it then labor and materials, there is also sound planning and quality work.
Be Honest and Up Front
To gain a reputation as a good construction company, you will need to be honest and do what you say you will do. Sometimes this will mean telling people things that they do not want to hear. It is acceptable to get a long lead time, if that is actually how long it will take. Don't tell someone that you will be available in two weeks, if you will not be. If something comes up that changes your schedule, let them know what it is.
Now that you know how to start your own construction company, you can get started today.
