Ten Ideas that Have Helped Me to Succeed in My Business

Whether you're thinking about starting a business or are already in a business of your own and just need some reliable and truthful advice and tips, the ideas here enclosed are ideas that have worked for me and have found a measure of success with them. I pass them on to you in hopes that you can share in some of my success.

Please keep in mind though, these are just general ideas and no specifics are mention.

#1 -) What Is Your Business. The first thing you need to do in starting a business is to figure out what type of business you would like to start. Their is no shortage of business ideas and start-ups on the internet. But, I highly recommend you choose something that interests YOU in this matter. What are you good at? Do you have any hobbies? Do have any specific thing of interest that you really like? I will give you my example. About over 10 years ago, I started painting for some family and friends as a way to help them out when they moved into new apartments/ homes. I did this not for money, or very little their of, but simply because I wanted to help them out. I got to like painting and some years later, started my own painting business. I still have this business today and is one of my means of support and living.

It is important when your thinking of what type of business you want to start, you take the necessary time needed to carefully think through your ideas, even perhaps talking about your idea(s) with your spouse, family and/ or friends to get some feedback from them and proceed accordingly.

#2 -) Registering Your Business. Assuming you have now decided what type of business you are going to go into. One of the very first things you need to do is to register your business name with your local government office. Every state or province have a separate department for doing this. Its best to check with your local government offices to help you locate where you need to go to register your business. I might add though, registering your business is a must if you want to operate and function as a legal business within your community. Their are many benefits in so doing, one of which are the tax benefits that come with it.

#3 -) Opening A New Business Account. Opening up a separate business account is a must in starting a business. You will need to separate your personal banking from your business banking. This will also enable you too see how your business is doing later on. It also can assist you get some immediate needed funds to start your new business. Let me explain. By having a registered business and a separate business account, financial institutes will see that you really mean business and will want you to succeed. In most cases and in most financing banking institutes, they extend and/or give new businesses a line of credit or additional credit to help you operate and maintain your business on a daily and monthly basis. I could recall, when I opened up my first business account, my financial institute gave me nearly $10,000 in line of credit to help operate my business successful. This was a huge benefit for me knowing I had some extra funds to get my business started.

#4 - ) Spending Money (Cash Flow). Besides the additional credit that you may get from banks, it is wise that you give yourself some spending money to help operate your business successful on a daily basis. Their is a fundamental rule in business,..."It takes money to make money" This is so true. Having money on hand helps you to avoid any pressure or stressful situations that could lead you to make bad business decisions.

#5 - ) Advertising Your Business. Unless you already have a established clientele for your business and even if you do, advertising your business is key to having success in business. Unless people KNOW that your open for business, people won't know your in business. Whether its a few $100's or $1000's of dollars, its important to set aside a specific budget to advertise your business. You can start your advertising through local Newspapers, TV, Radio and Online classifieds websites. Good Judgement on your part plays a key role in this area.

Whenever I needed clients, I would put a small 10 word classified ad in a local community newspaper in my area and I would usually get a a good 5-10 replies of people interested in my services.

#6 - ) Getting Customers and Keeping Them. Your customers keep you in business. Without customers or clientele, you have no business. Treat your customers with respect and value them and you will have success in business. From time to time, giving free things to your customers goes a long way to establishing a loyal clientele.

#7 -) Accounting. I like to speak from experience here. Its very important to have some kind of accounting system in place to help your business know where its going. An accounting system in place monitors your business success or failure. If you can afford it, you can always hire a bookkeeper or accountant depending on the size of your business and this will eliminate the hassles of collecting, calculating and imputing invoices and receipts into your business accounting. Because of my love for figures and numbers, I have chosen to have my own accounting system and this has helped me to have better insight to my business finances.

#8 -) Hiring Employees, Interns, Volunteers. This is mainly to do with the growth of your business. Do you want to have a small or medium business? a corporation? Maybe you just want to be like me and be in business working for just yourself. Whatever you choose, you would want to treat and pay your employees and those around you fairly and honestly because they are the ones that would be working for you and basically keeping your business profitable and growing.

#9 -) Pricing. Whether you are selling a product or service, keeping your prices at a reasonable amount is crucial. One of the key things to remember with regard to pricing is to set a amount where you can not ony cover your daily costs, but come out with some measure of profit.

#10 -) Have Fun!!! I believe this is the most important point in starting a business. You want to have fun and enjoy your new found business venture. Remember, you going into business is not just a regular, boring, dead end job that many people experience everyday. Its a self employed business venture that is making a difference in your community. You are in 100% in total control, instead of it controlling you. You work when you want, how often you want.
