How to Start Up Windows XP Safe Mode Using the F8 Key
There are times when you must start up your Windows XP computer system in Safe Mode, for example if you need to remove certain malware - viruses, spyware, Trojans, keyloggers, adware, etc that cannot be removed while in standard mode. Read on to learn how to start up Windows XP safe mode.

Step1
Close any programs you have open and reboot your computer.
Step2
Watch for your BIOS to finish loading (this will be displayed on screen)
Step3
Press the F8 key, and hold until the screen appears
Step4
Use the arrow keys of your keyboard to get to "Safe Mode" in the Windows Advanced Options menu. Press Enter. Your PC will now reboot in Safe Mode.
Step5
Wait for the process to complete, as it may take a few minutes
Step6
Once you have resolved the issue you were working on, close all the programs you have open, and then reboot your PC as normal.

How to Start Up Windows XP Safe Mode from the Start Menu

Step1
Close any programs you have open. Click on "Start" and then Run. Now type in: msconfig into the text box. Click OK.
Step2
In the window that pops up, click on the BOOT.INI tab. Check the box for Check /SAFEBOOT. Click OK. This will open the System Configuration window.
Step3
When prompted, click on Restart to reboot your computer. Your PC will now reboot in Safe Mode. Wait for the process to complete, as it may take a few minutes.
Step4
Once you have resolved the issue you were working on, reset your PC to reboot in its default mode, rather than into Safe Mode. Simply repeat all the steps above, being sure to un-check the box next to /SAFEBOOT

Quick Tips
Get more information on starting your computer in safe mode by clicking: Start and then Help and Support. Next, type safe mode into the Search box and then press ENTER. Click on "Start Windows in safe mode."
