How to Start a Writing Business

Choosing a Niche

Are you thinking of starting a home business? There are several home business types to choose from.

If you enjoy writing, you might like to start a writing business.

You don't need to have a degree in English in order to make money writing. You just need the ability to write clearly and well. If you don't feel confident about your writing skills, you can always take a writing or grammar class to sharpen them.

Choosing a Niche for Your Writing Business

The benefits of specializing in one area of writing are that, as a specialist, you can charge more, and you can learn more about your particular field of writing.

Do you want to write for the Web or for print? Each type of writing requires different skills. Online writing is broken into short chunks to make it easier to read. When you're writing for print, you can write longer paragraphs that flow.

What topics do you like to write about? You can choose to specialize on topics you already know, or are willing to learn about. When you write on topics you don't know well, you'll spend more time doing research, which means you'll have less time to spend writing.

Setting Your Prices

Writers can charge by the hour, by the word, or charge a flat project fee.

When you're setting prices for your writing business, talk to other writers in your field to learn what they do. You can also research other writing businesses by shopping around as if you were a consumer.

Before you set your prices, it's important to consider who you want to write for. If you would like to work with new business owners who are just starting out, they'll have a smaller budget than an established company will.

If you enjoy writing for large corporations or government agencies, your prices will have to be in line with others in your industry. Charge too little, and your potential clients might wonder if you're not as good as your competition.

Types of Writing Businesses You Can Start

Here is a list of some writing services you could offer. You might want to choose only one to specialize in, or offer a combination of services that interest you.

Copywriting: Copywriting is the skill of writing to sell products.

Good copywriters are always in demand. There are plenty of copywriters around, but not all of them are very good. Business owners will pay big dollars for well-written copy that sells their service or product.

Technical Writing: If you enjoy learning how to use new software and products, and teaching others how to use them, you might enjoy technical writing.

Business Writing: All businesses need documentation such as business plans, business letters and annual reports.

Web Content Writing: Online business owners are learning that their websites need to give their visitors information, not just sell products or services. However, not all business owners have the time to create their own content and they are willing to pay someone to write for them.

Article Writing: Article writing and marketing is a very popular and effective method of gaining traffic for a website, or customers for an offline business. This is another skill you can learn.

E-book and Special Reports Writing: Business owners give away e-books and special reports to their list subscribers, or sell them for a profit.

A writing business is very flexible because you can choose what you write about, the type of writing you do and who you do it for. If you enjoy writing, this might be the perfect business for you to start.
