How State Governments Can Raise Millions of Dollars

Do You like Your Driver's License Picture?

Stephen Joltin
It occurred to me when I renewed my Driver's License yesterday that the most common complaint I've heard is the unfavorable picture The Motor Vehicle Association always seems to slap on your driver's license. Mine made me look fatter, older, balder, and more wrinkled than I picture myself. Now I'm a guy and I could just imagine how most women feel about their pictures. What's worse is that you have to live with this picture for 5 years in my State of Maryland.

Then it occurred to me how my State could raise a fortune without raising taxes. Tens of millions of dollars where right there in front of me. Just as you can pay extra and get a vanity license plate, many more people would pay extra to get a flattering picture of themselves on their driver's license. Here is how it would work.

Each person who wants this service has to pay $20 in addition to the normal licensing fee. For that you get three posses instead of just one to choose from. In addition, while still having a recognizable picture they can condense the pixels to make you look 10 pounds lighter. Most photo editing software also allows you to add a little color, say a week at the beach more tan. Low contrast would take care of those wrinkles.

So you get the best of three shots, a skinny photo and a tan and Botoxed for just $20 extra. Who wouldn't spend this money? There is no better deal anywhere. It could cost you many thousands at a beach spa and a makeover to actually look like this. Take that trip to Europe instead or put a down payment on a Lexus.

The Federal Government could also make hundreds of millions if not billions by doing the same thing for your passport photo.

This has to be the greatest idea I ever thought of. All I ask for is a 1% royalty for the idea.

Excellent ideal. I would pay the $20 for a decent photo.

What a great article. And a terrific idea! I think this is a program that should begin in California! Think Nip Tuck, Beverly Hills, Botox, etc. I'm guessing that Governor Schwarzenegger could be brought on board simply based on the tax saving virtues of this idea let alone the vanity angle. Here's his contact information for anyone willing to send this article to him: Governor's Office:

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger,
    State Capitol Building,
    Sacramento, CA 95814,
    Phone: 916-445-2841

LOVED IT!!!! Lol but then I thought, why not? Great innovative idea. Send this to your state government. I am forwarding the email to mine. Even if they don't use the software, the extra money for extra shots is a great idea.
