How to Stay Cool when the AC Goes Out

A Few Tips to Keep You from Murdering Your Heating and Air Technician

Malina Debrie
When the air goes out, do not consider murdering your AC technician. Here are just a few tips on how to stay cool and comfortable until the he or she arrives. It's a common occurrence! Even though you may have just had the unit serviced, the heat and the humidity will cause the least little problem with the unit to surface. Then you are left melting in the house. So, when the heat dies or the air goes out, do not threaten to kill the heating and air technician, maintain your cool by considering one of the following tips.

Stay Cool By Turning The AC Unit Off

Most people will continue to turn the thermostat down when the AC is going out. This only increases the amount you will pay your electrical provider. Turning the unit down is the one thing you do not want to do. Turn the AC unit completely off then close all windows and doors. If you have ceiling or floor fans, turn those on. This will help to continue the flow of any remaining cool air. Prayerfully, your technician will be arriving soon and before you know it, your air will be flowing cool again.

Get Dressed and Leave Home

If at all possible and its going to be a little while before the tech arrives, get dressed and leave home. A hot house only causes frustration. There is not need to remain in the house if the air is out. No longer can we survive in our homes without cool air flowing. The way homes are constructed today, insulation keeps the house cool during the summer and warm during the winter. While insulation is valuable, it can also do us an injustice when the AC or heat is on the blink. So, get in your car and take off. Leave your cell phone number for the technician to contact you when he is ready to head to your home.

Take a Cold Bath

Not only is a cold bath refreshing, it can be quite a lifesaver when the AC is on the blink. Run your tub full of cold water and hop in. If married, make it a twosome. Get your significant other and both of you can have a good time staying cool in the tub until the tech arrives.

Drink Plenty of Cold Water

Water is something most of us definitely need to drink more of. So, when the air is on the blink, load up on cold water. If the refrigerator does not make enough ice to last until the AC tech arrives, go to the nearest air station and purchase a bag. It will keep you cool, moist and comfortable until the tech arrives.

Spritz Yourself with Cold Water

Most of us have a spritzer at home. But if not, go out and purchase one today. A spritzer is always a good item to keep around for numerous reasons. One good way to stay cool is to spritz your body with cool water. You can stay cool for hours just by allowing ice to melt in the bottle and spritzing yourself as needed with the cold, refreshing water.

Lounge in the Pool

If you have a pool, there is no better time to take a swim or just lounge around in it. Get your partner, children and all family members together and head for the pool. If you do not have a pool at home, head to the nearest community pool for the afternoon. Make it a family outing. But remember to keep your cell phone handy. You do not want to miss the AC techs call when he is headed to your location.

When we still lived in NC, our air went out in August (the HOTTEST month of the year!). I don't wish that on anyone.

Thats good advice. On humid days without power, I often keep a wet facecloth handy to wipe my face and neck.

That happened last week here and it was miserable.

This is not a fun situation. I usually go to the air-conditioned mall and people watch!

Great tips. If my AC went out, I couldn't stand to stay at home. Here in "sunny" AZ, it gets to 110+.... :o)
