How to Stay Focused Writing Articles All Day

Ten Tips for Extended Article Writing

Christi Bowers
Anyone can write one article and call it a day. Maybe they write a top ten list on the top ten citrus fruits for Associated Content. Or perhaps they write their opinion of why the Steelers should never have won the Superbowl in 2009.

However, to write five, ten or fifteen articles in one day is a much more daunting task. You don't have the leisure to sit down for an hour and pound something out. You have to find a way to focus all day long.

If your pocketbook counts on article writing, or you're trying to build up a substantial base of articles, you understand why this is important. You can't write just one or two articles per week. Consistency and control is important, if you are to meet your financial and writing goals.

This article will give you ten tips to help you stay focused writing articles all day.

1. Set a goal. The first step to take is to determine how many articles you want to write in one day. If you need to write at least ten to pay the bills, then this is your goal.

2. Figure out how you can reach the goal. Determine the average time it takes you to write an article. If you usually spend an hour, you realize it will take ten hours to write ten articles. This means you have to have a plan. For example, you start at 8 am, write for four hours, take lunch, write for four hours, eat dinner, and write for two more hours. This gives you ten hours.

3. Eat. Skipping meals isn't going to help you write articles. You'll get a headache, or lose focus because you're hungry. I like to try to get started writing my first article before eating breakfast, however. This gets me started in the swing of things, before I become relaxed once the food kicks in and starts digesting.

4. Eat light. If you eat a heavy meal, you're going to want to take a nap instead of write articles. Avoid eating a heavy starch meal, like pizza or a huge breakfast with eggs and sausage. Talk about a sleep coma coming on!

5. Eat healthy. If you're only going to write one or two articles, a sugar buzz or caffeine buzz may be just what you need for a short term focus. However, this buzz never lasts. You need to eat food that will keep you going all day long. Try fruits and vegetables, as well as soup and protein. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

6. Take regular breaks. You could take a break after you finish each article. I like to start into the next article, at least laying the groundwork, before I take the break. This helps me get back into writing once the break is over.

Writing articles on the internet means you're going to be staring at a computer screen all day. Your eyes need a break as well. Step outside, get some fresh air, and take in a different view.

7. Be fit. The more fit you are, the easier it is to maintain focus. Try walking a mile every day, or running two or three times per week. Even yoga and pilates can help increase your concentration. If you just sit around all day, every day eating chips and pretzels and drinking soda, at some point your article writing will start to suffer.

8. Find a way to help your mind wander briefly. Believe it or not, your mind needs a break from writing every so often. You could listen to a song, or watch a short YouTube video as an escape. You might want to visit a vacation website, or look at some sunset photos. You don't want to do this too often, because you could end up spending all of your time not writing. However, a few seconds or minutes here and there throughout the process can help you maintain control.

9. Get enough sleep on a regular basis. It's difficult to write articles if you're tired. You may be able to pull out one or two, but ten articles isn't likely to happen if you're on three or four hours of sleep.

10. Learn what works for you. It may be that if you run a mile right before you start writing articles, you find you have endless energy. Someone else might be too exhausted after physical activity to concentrate at all. Try out different things, until you see what works best. Stick to this as much as possible any days you will be writing lots of articles.

11. Bonus tip. Write an easy article every so often. If you try and write ten articles in a row that are ones you need to research heavily, it can get tiresome. Throw in a fun article, or a top ten list. For instance, this article I just wrote was my break from writing some more serious articles today!

It will be easier to write ten articles in a day if you take breaks every hour or so, to give your mind a chance to relax.
