How Stay at Home Moms Can Make Money in a Bad Economy

Kathy Burns-Millyard
If you have made the decision to stay at home and raise your children or care for the house instead of going to work, you may be worried about how your family will survive in such bad economic times. You already know how bad the economy is getting, because we hear about companies going under every day on the news. And those who aren't going under, are probably laying people off in order to survive. This can be nerve-racking for stay at home moms, since their family depends on just one income.

Even if it seems like your spouse's income is more than enough to cover your bills, and even if you're not worried about your spouse being laid off or getting a reduction in hours, you can ease your worry about the economy by helping to make some money for the family yourself.

Since you don't have a job outside the home right now, you could of course simply try to find one. Even a part-time job can help supplement your family's income and make you feel more secure regardless of how bad the economy gets. Since so many companies are actually laying people off though, or even closing their doors, even a part-time job may be difficult to find.

You also need to consider the reasons why you decided to become a stay-at-home mom to begin with. It may not be feasible for you to get a part-time job, particularly if your children are still quite young. It's not unusual to have to pay more for daycare expenses then you can make in your job. And this of course would defeat the entire purpose of going to work in the first place. So before deciding how you will help supplement your family's income, consider all of the reasons why you chose to stay at home in the first place.

Making Money does not require you to leave home in every case though. In fact, you can actually take advantage of the bad economy by offering services to your neighbors which you can do right from your home. If your neighbors are struggling financially for example, you could offer to replace their daycare for them. This would allow them to reduce the money they're paying for child care, and it would give you another source of income.

There are other services you can also offer your friends, family, or neighbors for pay. If you frequently take your kids to various school activities or extracurricular events, you could start a mom taxi service and transport other children as well.

If you normally cook your family's dinners from scratch, you might want to consider offering food services to others as well. When you cook dinner, simply make a double or triple batch, and package the extra up for your friends, family, or neighbors. This would save them time, and expense, and allow you to make extra money for your family.

In addition to these local moneymaking options, there are also several ways you can make money from the Internet. If you do a lot of sewing, knitting, crochet, or other handmade crafts for example, you could sell these items online.

These are only a few of the many simple, easy to start ideas that can help stay-at-home moms make extra money to help out their family whether the economy is good or bad.
