How to Stay Motivated on a New Workout Program

Tina M. Morlock
After spending a long time living a sedentary lifestyle, it's not surprising that some people have a hard time sticking with their routines. That's why it's extremely important to find various ways to stay motivated. Without any motivation, interest is lost and so are the benefits.

The most important thing to do before starting the routine is to make one long term goal first and then break it down into several short term goals. For example, a healthy long term goal could be to acquire and maintain a toned body with a healthy range of body fat. But, how can you break that down into smaller more manageable goals?

One thing you can do to accomplish this is to make an appointment with a personal trainer. While some trainers can be expensive, try shopping around with all of the gyms in your area. You might even find that upon joining one of those gyms, they will set you up with a few appointments free of charge for assessments and creating a healthy workout plan. If you can't find a place like this, they more than likely will have trainers that will charge anywhere from $20 an hour up to $100 an hour. If you purchase a membership, their fee will most likely be closer to the $20 range.

If you remain focused on your ultimate goal, you may get frustrated quickly. So, focus on those smaller goals to keep motivated. Come up with daily or weekly goals that work toward a common goal.

It's also important to be proud of yourself for taking this beg step. You are taking small steps towards a healthier body and lifestyle. Pat yourself on the back!

One way you can do this is to reward yourself either on a weekly or a daily basis. Some health clubs have a pro shop that sells treats, such as smoothies that are low in fat and calories with a high concentration of protein that you will definitely need after your workout.

Another way to reward yourself is to set aside a certain amount of money for new clothes each month. Not only will it make you feel better, but if you stick to your goals, you will need smaller clothes. If you live close to a Ross Dress for Less, you can shop there for an economical way to supplement your wardrobe. Their website can be found at - www.rossstores.com.

If you're still having problems motivating yourself, it might help you to find a workout partner. Share your goals with your partner so that you can help each other stay on track. If you don't have any friends in the area that will go with you, an alternative is to find an online buddy that is going through the same thing. While it's not the same thing, an online buddy can still help motivate you.

An active website that you might start at is www.bodybuilding.com. It's free to join and will allow you to record and track your progress. In addition to that, they also have an online store, a database of exercises sorted by muscle groups, and active forums of people on different fitness levels.

No matter what you do, stay positive. Some days you will be discouraged, annoyed, or even defiant, but realize that if you allow those emotions to keep you from achieving your goals, you may regret it later. Be stubborn yet determined. In a few months or a year from now, you will have accomplished something that you and those around you will be proud of.
