How to Stay Positive in a Freelance Writing Career

Mary Frederick
We all know that taking critcism is part of almost any job. We are all a work in progress and we usually have a lot to learn. Even if you're an expert in a given field, you can still learn new skills that make you sharper. When it comes to the world of freelance writing, it can be a cruel world. Particularly in this economy, there are a lot of people competing for the same assignments and it can be rough. You have to remember though that it will turn around and you will find a great assignment before you know it. I have learned this the hard way and am happy to say that I've stayed positive through it all. (well most of the time!)

If you are taking on freelance writing, even in a novice fashion then you need to keep some things in mind. Here are a few things that I've learned along the way.

*Never give up! No matter how tough it gets or how much you may feel like you will never succeed, stay positive. Your luck will turn around before you know it, truly.

*Don't be too hard on your writing ability. It's easy to give into criticism that you may receive and decide that you are not cut out for this profession. I think that every freelance writer has had that moment and it's important to stay above that. You will get criticism but it can't break you.

*You have to learn to have a tough skin. Writing is one of those things that is very subjective and everybody out there has an opinion. You may have twenty people review your work and will inevitably have twenty different opinions. Stick with it and learn that you can perservere even the harshest criticism.

*Learn from the criticism as it is often valid. You can usually tell somebody that is being nit-picky for no reason and somebody who knows their stuff. Learn from the people that have experience and who can help you to become more established.

*Get creative! When you feel as if you will never find another assignment, learn to find new avenues. While the usual websites are helpful, sometimes thinking outside of the box and taking a proactive approach can make a world of difference.

Freelance writing can be very competitive and at times brutal. It can also be very rewarding if you stick with it and stay positive. You will find another assignment, and your work will get even better with time. Learn from the criticism and remember that every writer got their start somewhere.
