Something to Think About

Mrs. Renee

With winter comes a lot of fun activities, but also a lot of injuries as well. If you will be skiing for the first time there are several precautions that you should take into mind before you begin. Following are a few suggestions on how you can stay safe and injury free during your first ski trip.

1. The first thing that you will need to do is get yourself some ski equipment, such as a helmet, and of course the proper skis. If you are not sure exactly what equipment you need or how to choose the right skis then you should take a long a friend who has been skiing before of take the time to ask the person at the store what would be best for beginners. Make sure that your ski boots fit snug and properly.

2. Always stretch properly. The last thing on your mind is probably stretching before you ski. But this is a very important thing to do. You need to loosen up your muscles since this is something that you do not normally do.

3. Dress in layers. It may not feel so cold when you first get on the slopes, once you start falling down in the snow and you have been out in the weather for a while you will definitely begin to feel the affects of the cold weather.

4. There's nothing wrong with getting help. Every ski resort has some sort of ski instructor that teaches classes to those who have never skied before. If this is the first time you have every been skiing then you really need to find the time for a few lessons. They will be able to tell you the proper way to ski, so that you do not end up injuring yourself.

5. Stay hydrated. Many fail to realize how much energy a person's body can burn on the slopes. You will need to make sue that you drink plenty of water, so take plenty of breaks. It will also give you a change to warm yourself up a bit. Remember you want to enjoy your skiing trip not make yourself sick.

6. Stick to the beginner trails. You should never try to venture out onto the more advanced trails if you are a beginner. All resorts have the trails clearly marked, so make sure you understand what the various levels are.

7. Be aware of those around you. A lot of accidents occur because first time skiers are not paying attention to their surroundings. Even if this is your first time skiing you need to make sure that you are aware of who is around you and that you are not in any one's way. Not only do you not want to be in an accident but you do not want to be the cause of one either.

Your first ski trip can definitely be a lot of fun, as long as you apply some of the suggestions that are indicated above. This will help you to get the most our of your trip, and before you know it you will be on the bigger better slopes in no time.
