Install an antivirus program and scan your computer:
Kapersky Anti-Virus and Norton AntiVirus are some of the high-end antivirus programs that are available on the market. These, however, do come with a hefty price tag. If you aren't willing to pay, you may consider the AVG AntiVirus Free Edition.
If you are using a Mac, you aren't entirely safe! Consider installing ClamXav, a free antivirus scanner.
Avoid dangerous looking sites:
If a site looks like it shouldn't be trusted, it probably is dangerous to your computer! Try to stay away from sites that may offer you free PlayStation 3's, iPods, iPhones, iPads, laptops, or HD TVs (to name a few). Most of these types of sites aren't the best places to visit.
Don't open attachments in your Email from unknown senders:
Turn off any auto-open feature that your Email provider may have included. Attachments from unknown senders may contain viruses or have viruses embedded into them.
Don't download random files:
Don't download anything from someone that you may not know. If you are using torrent software or Limewire, you may want to consider stop using them. Many files on these types of sites may be infected or may have come from an infected computer.
Scan removable memory drives before using them:
If you are transferring files from someone else's memory drive (USB, CD, external hard drive, you name it!), scan the drive before using it. Chances are that your friend may have a virus on their computer, which could get transferred onto yours.
Consider using a new Internet browser:
Firefox is one of the most secure Internet browsers to use. Generally, it is considered much safer for browsing the Internet than Internet Explorer. While Firefox is more secure, it also provides more features and compatibility, thus making the Internet easier to use and navigate.
Constantly update your computer:
Set up your Windows Update manager to automatically download patches and upgrades. Whenever new security updates and patches appear, your computer will download them and update your computer. This will keep you more safe and up-to-date.
The Internet can be a dangerous place, but with some cautious thinking and smart action, it can become safe. Just remember to avoid things that seem dangerous and you'll be alright.
