How to Stay Safe with Rouge Anti Viruses

Seth Luke
Rogue anti viruses can be a real pain, in you're computer and outside in your real life too. Here are a couple things you can do to avoid them, and what they are.

First things first, a rogue antivirus is a fake anti virus. They "scan" your computer, showing false threats and ordering you to buy their full product. Sometimes, if you say you don't want to upgrade to their full antivirus and leave your computer 'unprotected' they will do some pretty bad things to your computer, such as changing you're wall paper, adding advertisements and new icons on your desktop, change your homepage and more. They say the only thing to stop the madness is to buy their product, which is not true at all.

Some popular rogue anti viruses are error clean, antivirus 2007 and 2008, and 2009, and the new 2010, XP, Vista, XP Police, Personal antivirus (I got this one the other day. It's such a pain) and a lot more. Sometimes, there will be a pop up, saying your computer is unprotected and has viruses and you need to download their antivirus, which is not true at all. They just want you to download their product. Never download anything from a pop-up, ever. If you get a pop up when surfing the web, do not click anything inside it, even if it's not a link, and don't click the X button, press on your key board alt +f4.

Why do people do such an evil thing? It's for money. How? Some people may not be as tech savvy as others, and are very easy in giving out there credit card information to a program that looks real. In most of these anti viruses, you have to buy the full product with your credit card and they will steal your information and steal money from you.

Sometimes, it may not even be a pop-up. You could be clicking a link thinking it's something else, but it's really not. That's how I got infected with "Personal Antivirus". The only real way you can do to avoid this, is to download McAfee's Site advisor and/or MyWot. These give a report on what they found on the website your visiting, and say if it has viruses or not, or it's a phishing scam.

Now to remove these pests. Go ahead and download Malware Bytes, and it should get rid of it. If it doesn't, post the log on bleapingcomputer.com and they will tell you how to get rid of it. Stay safe surfing!
