How You Can Steal Customers From Big Business

Michelle Hoffmann
Have you ever wondered how small businesses survive today, when there are so many large, national companies to compete with?

Even though small business owners face competition from companies that are larger and have more resources than they do, there are numerous ways that they can successfully compete with their competition.

It is important to remember, if you are one of these small businesses, that you remember that. This sets you apart from the crowd, it makes you unique. It does not mean that you are at a disadvantage when it comes to your business. On the contrary. There are thousands of customers who would rather do business with small businesses rather than the larger ones. They like the friendly manner with which most small businesses treat their customers.

Unfortunatly, many small business owners end up closing their doors. There are many reasons for this, it could be that they were unprepared for the amount of business that they received or it could be the opposite. They did not receive the amount of business that they had prepared for.

One way that you could ensure that your small business receives customers, especially if you are competing with a large department store or shopping mall, is give your customers a reason to keep coming back. There are different ways of doing this, and all of them can attract even more business if you do them right.

Keep your business clean and organized. Dust and mop daily, make sure that aisles are not blocked by trash or products laying in them. Remember, if your store is clean and easy to navigate and the products well displayed, customers will remember you. They will tell their family and friends about how clean and well kept your store is.

Provide good customer service. If you and your employees show your customers that they are important, especially by greeting them using their first names (if known) or if they will feel that they can just come in and talk, then you will have created the type of business that is sought out by most consumers.

This will help your small business compete with the larger businesses who have a much less "consumer friendly" feel about them. They are more focused on "money" than they are on "a happy customer is a return customer". If you keep the customers happy, they will keep coming back.

This holds true especially with online businesses. A site that has good customer service, has a well thought out and clean design and makes the customer feel like they are important is a site that has all of the earmarkings of success.

Another way to make your customers feel like they are a part of your business, and thereby keep coming back, is to put up a suggestion box on the site or in your store. Ask them for ideas on what to supply or how you can change the store to make it better. This is also another large component of customer service.
