How to Stencil Wood Floors

Amy Whittle
Stenciling your wood floor is an inexpensive way to add a pattern to the room. Although stenciling techniques are relatively simple, do not attempt this project unless you will have the patience to carefully lay out the stencil and apply the paint. Otherwise, you should avoid this project and keep your wood floor one color.

Step 1: Make sure your floor is in excellent condition before beginning this project. Fix any weak spots and fill any holes or scratches before continuing.

Step 2: Carefully measure the room. Plan how you intend to use the stencil, and figure out how to address corners and the edges of the room.

TIP: If you are looking for maximum impact with a minimal amount of stenciling, choose a stencil that you can use to create a border around the edge of the room. A classic design that can easily be repeated is a good choice.

Step 3: Tape down the stencil using painter's tape. Use a measuring tape to ensure that the stencil is in the proper location before securing the stencil to the floor.

Step 4: Apply a coat of paint to the cut out areas of the stencil using a foam brush. Be sure to address the edges of the design, but do not over saturate the brush with paint to avoid seeping underneath the stencil.

TIP: Stain can also be used in this project instead of paint. Stain will give your project a more refined, monochromatic appearance.

Step 5: Remove the stencil carefully. Wipe away any stain from the surface and edges of the stencil using a rag. Reposition the stencil to the next location and tape it down.

Step 6: Continue applying paint or stain to the stencil and then removing the template and repositioning it. You should repeat this process for as many times as it takes to complete your intended design. Allow the floor to dry completely before continuing.

Step 7: Apply a coat of acrylic varnish over the entire wood floor using a paint roller with a long handle attachment. This will protect the floor stencil from damage. Allow the acrylic varnish to dry, then apply a second coat.
