How I Stimulated Growth for My Small Business

Emilia Zs Rak
With the shrinking job market many people have decided to take the leap into starting their own small business. At no time in the recent past has it been more crucial to avoid the common pitfalls that many small business owners make as they fumble their way through the early years. This article is designed to give the business advice many need in order to get a leg up and achieving small business growth more quickly. There is no room for error in this economy.

Know your product

I've heard it over and over again. Somebody will have a great idea and think that they can "make it fly" just on the merits of the idea alone. Meanwhile, they have no clue about the specifics of their product, who their clientele will be or what safeguards need to be in place in order to make their business legal (i.e. insurance, code specifications, etc). This is one of the costliest mistakes a small business owner can make. You must do your research carefully before you jump into any small business situation.

Accept that you will be working practically 24/7

Another common misconception among those that have the "it's easier to be the owner of my own small business" fantasy is that you will actually work less hours than you would working as someone else's employee. In order for any small business to succeed and actually experience growth, the owner must work around the clock in most cases. Depending on the type of small business it may be necessary that you work when others commonly celebrate or sleep. The internet is both a blessing and a curse. It gives many small businesses the ability to reach a much larger client base but it can also make you a slave to your clients as that base extends through more time zones. The internet allows both freedom for many small businesses to operate from more locations but as previously stated, the more time zones you cross the less down time you will be afforded.

You will also get no paid sick days or vacation days. If you aren't working, chances are your business isn't generating income. If your business isn't generating income, then your business is losing money as you will always have overhead costs.

Make sure that your business is legal at all times

One of the costliest mistakes I've seen small businesses make is when they fail to maintain the proper insurance and have all of the necessary protocol in place. It only takes one accident, mishap or misunderstanding to get shut down. Mistakes like this are very easy to avoid if you do your homework. However, they are the mistakes that are the most difficult and costly to rectify once that particular horse has been let out of the barn.

Put a tremendous amount of time and effort into proper marketing

Regardless of how great your product/service is, if your target market does not know you exist then you will experience little if any small business growth. If your small business is not generating an income then you are actually losing money because you won't have money to pay for your overhead, let alone generate a profit.

If you choose not to heed this business advice, your small business will fail to experience business growth. It will actually put you right back where you started: in the unemployment line or working for someone else.
