Nail biting is a very common bad habit. A lot of people nail bite when they are nervous, stressed, or even bored. Nail biting can lead to short and ugly fingernails and even sickness. Here are some tips on how to stop this bad habit...

Make it Taste Gross

They sell nail polish that is made specifically to help people stop biting their nails. Most of them make the nails taste gross if you bite them. This will stop someone who bites their nails without noticing because right when they bite that nail, they will quickly realize what they did and be disgusted. This method will work over time because you will begin to associate nail biting with that gross taste. These products usually come in a clear color.

Research

Get research about the bad side effects to biting your nails. This will not only open your eyes but also probably gross you out. Biting your nails makes you more prone to getting infections, since your hands and nails can be carrying bacteria or viruses. Biting your nails can also damage your teeth.

Find Something Else

Find something else that you can chew on and put in your mouth, such as gum or a pen. If you have something else in your mouth, you won't need to be biting on yours nails, since your mouth will be busy.

Fake Nails

Find some nice looking fake nails and put them on. I bet you that you won't be chewing on those fake nails. This will taste like plastic and terrible, not to mention they are quite difficult to bite.

Nail Polish

Some people find painting their nails works because nail polish itself can taste gross, and when bite your nails you might get pieces of the nail polish in your mouth. It may also help if you get your nails done really nicely, so you do not want to mess them up.

Hypnosis

Some people want to stop biting their nails so bad that they will go to a hypnotherapist to get hypnotized. Many people claim this way does, indeed, work.

Pick One

It can be helpful if you pick only one nail to bite. This will allow you to still be able to bite your nails, but you're limiting yourself. This will let your other nails strengthen and grow. You can also do the opposite; you can pick a couple nails to not bite, while you still bite the rest. Once those nails grow and strengthen, you can pick a couple more to not bite. This method is basically weaning yourself off of nail biting.
