How to Stop Bleeding

If someone becomes injured and is bleeding badly, you will need to use quick thinking skills to stop the bleeding. Immediately press any thick cloth onto the bleeding wound. Do not be picky about the cloth you will use to apply to the wound. Remove and use your socks if you must. Infection should be the least of your worries as your goal and number one priority is to simply and quickly control the bleeding. Press the cloth onto the wound, and under no circumstance should you remove the cloth you are using as a bandage from the wound. Layer additional cloths, socks, shirts or whatever you have on hand over the first bandage and continue to apply pressure to the bleeding wound.

Elevate the wound if it is on a leg or arm. If the wound is severe continue to apply pressure until you arrive at the hospital, or an emergency crew arrives to your location. If when the bleeding has stopped or dramatically slowed down you can wrap something like a necktie around the wound tightly.

If you are tending to and treating a bleeding wound to the arm press your fingers into the Barchial pressure point, or the position where the main artery- The Brachial artery- above the wound comes closest to the bone and squeeze with your finger tips against the bone and apply pressure to that place while also continuing to apply pressure on the wound. If the wound is bleeding on a leg, press your extended fingers, on the flat area into the groin where the Femoral Artery and pressure points are located. If you suspect that there could be internal bleeding you should keep the victim still, lying down and warm. Do not use pillows or elevate the head. You should not move the victim, and call for emergency medical help.

A tourniquet should only be employed if the bleeding is extremely severe and could potentially be life threatening. Or if a limb, toe or finger has been severed. It is always advised that if there is a less severe method of stopping the bleeding is employed before turning to a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Such as applying pressure and utilizing a cloth.

It is important that severe bleeding is stopped immediately as it can be life threatening in a matter of moments. An item that many ladies will usually have on them that is ideal for using against a bleeding wound is a feminine maxi pad. It sounds silly, but after all this product is made with a similar purpose.
