Many cats spray around the house due to an underlying medical problem. If you have a cat that sprays, the first step is to head to the vet for a checkup. Cats are generally very clean animals and will want a clean area. If they are spraying in the house, they could be sick. Get your cat checked out first.
If you have eliminated sickness as a cause, the next likely culprit is that their litter box is dirty. As mentioned, cats like to be clean and that extends to the bathroom. If they are spraying then you need to clean their litter box more often or more thoroughly.
If this is not the cause, then you might consider whether or not you have changed the house around. Cats are very much creatures of habit. Moving the living room around can cause a cat to spray for sure. A new person in the house is another common cause of a cat spraying. If your home has changed in any way, this could be the reason behind your cat sharing his scent. Here is a natural way to solve this problem.
Obviously, if you have moved the cat's litter box you should make sure he knows where it is. If he was going in the litter box before and not now, then he is likely turned around. Simply place the litter box in the old area and move it about two feet towards the new spot each day. This will allow the cat to readjust. If your litter box did not change, then placing another litter box in the area that he is spraying can help as well. Gradually move the new litter box towards the old one each day as above and the cat will follow.
Another method to use when the cat is spraying because of home changes is to spray a lemon scent in problem areas. This will divert the cat from spraying in those areas most times, and instead send him to his litter box. Each time he sprays someplace new, just spray the lemon scent in the new area. One fresh lemon squeezed into a glass of water works nicely for the mixture.
Another problem for some indoor cats is another cat hanging around your house outside. If you have this problem, then limit their view of the outside until they adjust. This can be difficult, but with some persistence the cat will relax and stop spraying.
Each of these methods are useful to stop your cat from spraying, so feel free to try them all. Cats do not want to live in a urine smell and will use the litter box if you remove the source of stress.

Post a CommentI wondered why some cats do this. We had a cat, but he never pulled this. We are considering getting another cat in the future, and your tips will be useful as cat urine is positively one of the worst smells that I have come across.
