How to Stop Elderly Abuse Towards a Family Member

Michelle Knudson
Elder abuse is often a hidden type of abuse that people don't notice. Elderly people are often abused by family members and some nursing homes. There are several different types of elderly abuse though. Here are four ways on how to stop elderly abuse.

Document Elderly Abuse

Make sure to document any elderly abuse that you witness or see. Document any bruises by taking pictures of it. Document it with time and date. Document anything else that you can in order to make the case more strong to help the abuse stop.

File in Court Against Abusive Family Member

You can file in court against a family member to remove your elderly family member away from the abuser. You will have the full responsibility of taking care of the family member for several years. Family members often abuse elderly people so make sure to get them away from an abusive son or whoever in the family. Do not wait to take action!

File a Report with Adult Protective Services

Adult Protective Service are there to help protect the disabled and elderly people. You want to make sure that they are notified about the abuse that happened to your elderly family member. You want it to be on file due to any previous injuries that one might find later on from medical tests such as x-ray.

File a Lawsuit Against Nursing Homes

If your family member has been abused by the nursing home then make sure to file a lawsuit against them. File a report with the better business bureau and the county health department in the area as soon as possible. Do not delay in doing any of the reporting! Make sure to take pictures of anything that is abusive. Bring in a tape recorder if you need to. Bring in a hidden video camera if you need to in order to proof it happens. You may be able to help stop the abuse to other victim too that is caused by the bad nursing home.

Sexual abuse happens to elderly people. Physical abuse happens to elderly people. Financial abuse happens to elderly people as well. Make sure to document all the different types of abuse so that people will not continue to hurt them.
