How to Stop the Error Reporting Message "Send an Error Report to Microsoft" in Windows XP

TechTips
I hate when Windows XP has a problem and the computer locks up and when it finally recovers Windows asks me, do you want to send an error report to Microsoft? I wouldn't mind if I thought Microsoft was actually going to do something about the problem but most likely it won't do any good so I don't need to be continually asked if I want to send the report. It's a simple thing to turn off and in this guide I will walk you through the steps to disable this annoying pop-up.

The exact error reads like this:

MSN (or whatever program had the problem) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem (and then there is a button that says Send Error Report, see the screenshot for what the error really looks like)

Before you disable anything like this error report you should think about possible repercussions that it might have. If you disable this pop-up you will only be told that an error occurred and will not be asked if you want to send the report to Microsoft and won't have that option unless you re-enable the prompt. So make sure that you are 100% not going to ever want to send an error report to Microsoft before you turn off the prompt.

If you are OK with that and want to disable the prompt then just follow these steps:

1 - Right Click My Computer
2 - Click Properties
3 - Click Advanced Tab
4 - Click Error Reporting Button
5 - Click Disable Error Reporting Radio Button
6 - Click "But notify me when critical errors occur"
7 - Click OK

That is all there is to it, the prompt is now disabled, you will no longer be asked if you want to send error reports to Microsoft and will save yourself sometime when you get errors. The good thing about this guide is that you aren't turning off notifications about the errors, you will still be sent a pop-up that there was an error, you simply won't be asked to send the report any more. I don't know about anyone else but I never sent the error report, it made it seem to me like Microsoft was watching everything I do and I don't like that.

Well I hope this guide helps you to get rid of the annoying pop-up message.
