How to Stop a Fight Between Two Dogs

Charlotte Raynor
Different dogs react differently to other dogs. Each dog has a distinct personality and disposition along with how it enjoys certain environments. They also have certain levels of temper and if they reach their high tolerance of temper, they might get into a fight. There are times you might see your dog fighting with your neighbor's dogs or even the other dogs you own. If your dog happens to get into a fight, keep in mind that there are basically two critical items: your safety and your dog's welfare.

Dog have a known instinct that they think they need to fight in order to survive. Realizing that, you need to know that one of the dogs will not just pull out a white flag and go away defeated. About the only person that can stop fights between dogs is their owners. As a dog owner, it is one of your duties to keep your dog inline. In order to stop a fight between two dogs, here are some tips:

Divert your dog's attention. One way to do this is to throw a blanket or something similar on top of them. Do not strike the dogs with a heavy object. The only thing that will do will just make them more enraged and you might injure one of them. This will only make them have a bigger desire to fight. Another thing you can do is throw a pitcher of water on them. Dogs detest water. This should break the dogs up and having them running to keep themselves dry. Additionally, you can make a very loud and sudden noise. Usually the dogs will turn to where the noise is coming from therefore making it easier to separate them.

Think then take action rapidly. It is very hard to try to stay calm when you see your dog biting another dog or another dog biting your dog. Do not get flustered since you might just do the wrong thing. Remember, you could possibly injure your dog if you happen to make a mistake. Consider all the feasible ways to stop the dog fight. Request help from other people, particularly the other dog's owner. When you have your plan figured out, take action quickly. It might be next to impossible to stop a dog fight when it is in the height of the fight.

Stay safe. Do not jerk your dog's head because he just might bite you on impulse. Additionally, the other dog might bite you by accident. If you have a body protector of some kind, you might try to pull your dog off. Stay away from the dogs that are fighting if you do not have any protective gear. If you have a special sign or word that you know that your dog will come to you-use it. Do not yell since that will make your dog more hostile. He may think that you are cheering him on to fight harder.

Once your dog is out of the fight, take him to a relaxing area away from the other dog, even if it is yours, to let him calm down. If you let your dog see his opponent right after the jaws have released, they will start at it again. About five to ten minutes after relaxing, give your dog some water or some food. You might also want to play with him or take him for a walk in the park. Attempt to amuse your dog, so that he can get back to his usual self and activities as soon as possible.

When you attempt to stop a dog fight, the main idea is to make sure that neither you nor your dog receive a critical injury. Most of the time, you will achieve this goal by going along with some of the tips I have mentioned above. Just be sure to: Stay composed, think, then take action rapidly.

Lots of great advice Charlotte, I had to kick my dog once when she was trying to kill a baby goat, she was in heat and that might be why she acted that way.
