How to Prevent Foot Cramps

(1) At the very first sign of a foot cramp, push the heel of the foot as far from your buttocks as possible. This means straightening the leg as well. Then attempt to push the heel even further. Sit down or lay down, preferably, then push the heels of both of your feet away from your buttocks as far as possible. In some cases, this will stop a foot cramp before it gets painful and the job is done.

If any signs of the foot cramp continue, force the toes of your feet as far forward as possible. This also means, extend the upper part of your feet forward. Then point your toes towards you, as you again press the heels of your feet away from your body to the ultimate length. Go back and forth with your feet, then do it again, all the while pressing for maximum reach of your feet, as you are simultaneously stretching your leg muscles to the maximum. (Relax your feet and legs, momentarily before you change directions with your feet

( 2) Now turn your feet outwards to the max and repeat the above exercise. Then turn your feet inwards to the max and repeat the same routine. Then with your heels extended to the max, continuously, rotate your feet from pointing outwards to inwards. (This is a leg twisting and stretching exercise). Then with toes extended, twist your legs outwards and inwards.

(3) Wearing shoes with good arch support, instead of wearing flats or flip flops or going bare footed, may eliminate up to 99% of future foot cramps. (The arch support of different shoes vary, therefore in extreme cases, specially fitted shoes for maximum results may be desirable). A low salt diet may help rid you of future foot and leg cramps.
