How to Stop Getting Junk Mail

margaret
Are you tired of opening your mailbox every day to piles of junk mail? Junk mail is a waste of paper, it is a waste of your valuable time, and it is filling up garbage trucks everywhere. So how can someone stop or at least reduce the amount of junk mail they receive in the mail? Here are a few steps you can take to make a dent in the pile of junk mail cluttering up your mailbox.

Direct Marketing Association's Opt-Out Program

Sign up with them, to help stop national direct junk mail. It will take about 3 months for the amount of national mailings to decrease, so you need to be patient. You can sign up online or through the mail. There is a $1.00 charge to register. If you register online, you will need to use your credit card. If you register through the mail, you can send a check or money order. Their website is http://www. DMAConsumers.org

Opt Out Of Credit Offers

There is a service you can use to stop receiving endless credit card offers. It is called http://www.optoutprescreen.com You can also opt out of receiving offers for insurance at this site. It is easy to do, and your registration lasts five years.

Catalogs

Catalog companies love to share your mailing information with other publishing companies. If you have ever ordered from a catalog, or even inquired about one. Your address will probably end up on more publishers' mailing lists than you can imagine. You can go to http://www.abacus-us.com and send an email stating that you want to opt out from catalog mailings and to remove your name from mailing lists.

It is also a good idea to directly contact catalog companies directly and request that your mane and address be removed from mailing lists.

Product Registration Cards

When you fill out new product registration cards and survey cards, always include a request that your information not be shared. If you do not request this, your address information will probably end up on mailing lists for different publications.

Always Request Opt out

Most offers from companies and subscription services will offer an opt-out. Be sure to check it on applications. If you do not see that option, write it in yourself and sign it.

Telephone Listings

Some marketing companies get addresses from phone listings. You can either have an unlisted phone number, or request that the phone company not list your address with your name.

Junk mail will always filter through somehow. It is highly unlikely that you can stop it altogether. But taking some of the above steps should help lessen the amount you receive.

It's difficult...some "junk" mail I don't mind receiving. But then others -- like all the car insurance offers or junk newspapers -- are so annoying! Thanks for the tips though.

Very useful article. Junk mail probably contributes to a lot of pollution in the environment as well since most people throw it away. It would be fun if the mail could be reversed and sent directly back to the companies and people who send them. Maybe then, they will minimize sending unsolicited mail to people.

I hate junk mail. I've done all of the above and I still get tons. I probably get less because of the steps I've taken to stem the deluge. Great article, and congrats.
