How to Stop Pets from Ending Up in Animal Shelters

Shannon Frye
As I walk into an animal shelter I am destroyed by the number of faces I see looking back at me with desperation on their faces. I want to ask, "Which ones will be put to sleep first?" I want to save all of these animals, cats, dogs and others. I want to build a large barn outback and let them run free which a large fenced in yard. I know this isn't possible being twenty two years old with several pets while renting. I try not to think about what goes on in the animal shelters because it would destroy my life if I really knew the truth. So then you're probably wondering, "Why do these pets end up in animal shelters?" Now I am going to tell you the most common reasons why these pets which thought they were loved were given to somebody new.

The most common reason is that the owners are renting and cannot find a new place which will accept dogs or cats. Their family may not want to take on this responsibility and they are therefore forced to give the dog or cat to the humane society. You may also purchase a cat or dog and the landlord tells you that it's either you or the pet and one needs to leave. You know you can't leave just the pet, so you give the pet to the humane society.

Another reason is simply because the owners are moving. They do not want to take the dog or cat with them or they cannot do so for whatever reason. Dogs and cats sometimes will ride excellent in a vehicle. There's no reason to leave your friend behind to move out of state.

One common problem is allergies. You purchase a cat and your son won't stop sneezing. The best thing you can do is find this out before hand. Take your child around cats and dogs and see what happens to them. You don't want to be placed in this predicament. You might have to make this cat or dog an outside pet.

A big problem is the cost of the pets. Somebody loses their job and cannot afford to keep the pet any longer. Another problem is when people are having problems at home and the cat or dog is no longer wanted. If you are not in a steady situation you should wait to get a pet.

A big problem with cats is them peeing or spraying in the home. You can choose to get the cat neutered or even declawed if that is a problem. Cats are wonderful pets and shouldn't be given away for one simple problem that can be corrected, give your pet time.

Sometimes when you have a dog and you purchase a cat or vice versa, they will not get along. This happens to everybody. It takes time to get the animals to get along but they eventually will. It might take you several months but it will eventually work. Figure out how to keep them separated until you can get them to get along, but don't force them to.
