How to Stop Teen and Adult Thumb and Finger Sucking

ThumbGuard and FingerGuard for Teens and Adults

Rachael A. Lund
Most people are very familiar with children having a thumb or finger sucking habit. What's not so commonly known, is the fact that many teens and adults also struggle with a sucking habit. Some teens and adults may have no desire to break their habit, but others may be desperately looking for a way to stop their thumb or finger sucking that they may be ashamed of and often keep a secret.

Why Do Teens and Adults Suck Their Thumb or Fingers? Though you may instantly think that there has to be an emotional or psychological reason for a teen or adult to suck their thumb or fingers, that's not necessarily true. Often, the sucking habit is carried over from childhood because it was simply never broken. In some cases, they may never have been encouraged to break the habit as a child, but often, for those whose parents tried to stop them from sucking their thumb or fingers, nothing worked.

ThumbGuard and FingerGuard Works for Children, Teens, and Adults. Nothing working is often the case for parents looking for a way to stop their child from sucking their thumb or fingers. That was exactly the case for my six year old niece. Then her mom found the products called ThumbGuard and FingerGuard.

ThumbGuard and FingerGuard are listed by the FDA as medical devices. They consist of a medical-grade, flexible plastic guard that fits over the thumb or fingers, with slotted straps that go down the hand to the wrist, and adjustable bracelets used to secure the ThumbGuard or FingerGuard in place. Both are very easy to put on.

ThumbGuard and FingerGuard prevent a seal from being created by thumb or finger sucking. Without a seal, there is no suction, which is the source of pleasure in thumb or finger sucking. Without the source of pleasure, the desire to suck the thumb or fingers ends.

My sister-in-law used ThumbGuard for my niece and her thumb sucking habit was broken in four weeks. I recently found out that the ThumbGuard (or FingerGuard) that worked so well for my niece, can also be used by teens and adults. ThumbGuard and FingerGuard come in three sizes with the large fitting most teens and adults.

For a child, ThumbGuard or FingerGuard is worn 24/7. A teen or adult can wear the ThumbGuard or FingerGuard only at the times they know they need to, like bed time if that is the only time they suck their thumb. On average, ThumbGuard or FingerGuard is used for approximately four weeks, but can be used longer if needed, and again if there is a relapse in thumb or finger sucking.

ThumbGuard worked so well for my niece, that I highly recommend it and the FingerGuard to any teen or adult trying to find a way to stop their thumb or finger sucking habit. You can buy the ThumbGuard or FingerGuard online at A Zeal for Living. They come as kits that include two ThumbGuards (because thumb suckers often use both thumbs) or one FingerGuard, a How-to Video CD, and an instruction booklet.
