How to Stop Writer's Block

Can't Put What You Want on Paper, Here Are Some Tips to Get You Out of that Block

Krissy Pinkerton
If you're a writer like me, we all come across the always hated and inconvenient writer's block. We all get it. However, I have came up with some ways that personally have helped me get rid of writer's block. I hope they are helpful to you as a writer and can get you back to your passion of writing.

I think Einstein said it best. When in doubt, do something else and you will have what he referred to as "Eureka". I have found that this technique does in fact work sometimes. If you find yourself in front of your lap top, unable to think of what to write next, simply do something else. Do something that takes your mind away from your topic and usually, later on, what you wanted to say will come to you.

I have found one of the most successful ways to get your mind off of your writing is to listen to music. It doesn't even have to be music that you like or dislike, just any type of music. Your mind will go into the song and get rid of your block. I have found that after listening to music, later on my ideas usually flow better than ever and it helps me write better later on. Another way to get your mind away for a while is to watch TV or a movie. Watch something you normally wouldn't watch, it will open up your mind to other ideas and usually get your words flowing when you go back to your writing.

Talk to friends or go out. Talking to other people, for me at least, usually helps me generate ideas and write better. You can't spend your life in front of a lap top or a piece of paper and expect that all your writing will be good. You have to get out into the world. Find out interests of your friends and peers, it helps. Even if certain people have ideas and likes that differ from your own, that's even better. Taking a look at an idea from the eyes of somebody else will get your brain going and help you come up with all sorts of new ideas you never knew you could.

Another good solution to writer's block is to ask a random person that you know to give you a sentence. No matter what the sentence is that they give you, start with it. Go from there. Getting some fresh ideas from someone else is a good way to help your words flow freely and get you going again. Even if they give you a single word or topic, it helps.

Also, take out some paper and begin making lists. I know it sounds cliche, but it works. Write lists like, 100 things I like, 100 things I dislike, My favorite people, My enemies, 10 places only I have been, A list of dreams you have had, 10 best experiences in your life, 10 worst experiences of your life, and other lists similar to those. By thinking about all of these different areas, it will open your mind and get it going again. If you make enough lists and refer back to them for ideas, your writer's block should be a thing of the past.

Those are some of my tips but like every writer, I am still learning. I will continue to come up with ways to avoid this horrible thing they call Writer's block but for now I hope this information was helpful. Now get to writing!
