How to Store a Fur Coat: 4 Fur Coat Storage Options

Unlike Your Old Navy Windbreaker, Fur Coats Cannot Be Tossed in the Back of Your Closet!

Fur coats are an expensive investment that you'll want to keep looking new for long time. When winter wraps up and spring comes around, you'll need to figure out a storage solution for your fur coat. You can't just toss in the back of your closet like you do with your other coats! By properly storing your fur coat during the warmer months, you'll preserve its value and keep it in top shape. Here are a few options for storing your fur coat.

Storing a Fur Coat Option 1 - Hang in your own closet:
If you have a lot of closet space at home, you might be able to properly store your fur coat at home during summer months. Chose a wide-set hanger and place the fur coat in a closet out of direct exposure to sunlight. Sunlight oxidizes exposed areas of the coat, causing irreversible damage. Make sure there is enough room in the closet - you don't want your fur coat closely touching other garments, as this will crush the fur over time. Ideally, your closet should be at a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit and have proper air circulation. Do not store in a cedar closet. The cedar smell absorbs easily into fur, making the odor impossible to remove. Do not place plastic over your fur coat - plastic garment bags will eventually crush the fur.

Storing a Fur Coat Option 2 - Rent a storage space:
Storage facilities are available in most cities, offering reasonable rates. Many storage facilities offer climate-controlled conditions, protecting a fur coat from moth damage. You'll want to look for storage vaults with temperatures in the 40 to 60 degree range.

Storing a Fur Coat Option 3 - Dry cleaner's storage room.
Many dry cleaner's offer storage rooms for a nominal fee. Check with your dry cleaner for specific terms and conditions. Make sure to note their insurance policies, if any.

Storing a Fur Coat Option 4 - Use a professional fur service:
If your fur coat is extremely valuable, storing it for the summer at a professional fur facility is your best storage choice. These facilities are dedicated to fur storage and typically have state-of-the-art equipment, insurance, and security. They also provide beneficial services such as cleaning and repairs prior to putting your garment into the storeroom. Professional fur service storage options are also the most expensive, but it's a small price to pay if you want to keep your fur looking sharp.

Before storing your fur coat, have it cleaned at the end of the winter season. Cleaning it prevents stray hairs and other particles from settling into the leather hide, causing it to crack and dry out. By properly storing your valuable fur coat for the summer months, you'll add longevity and prevent deterioration.

I'm not anti fur...but I have never owned one because of the price tag. I guess I am anti price tag! Great advice here though :)

Wow, you have a fur coat!? (You should add, make sure no PETA activists know where your coat is!)

I'm not anti-fur. I store mine in my downstairs closet. I'll wear it this weekend. It's freezing here.
