How to Store and Maintain a Generator

Owning a generator can make the difference between sitting in the dark for days or being comfortable when everyone else has lost power. They can be used to run portable heaters in winter if there is a power failure or run a small window air conditioning unit in summer. Generators can be brought along on a camping trip you do not like roughing it. Proper storage and maintenance of your generator will help it last a long time and provide trouble free use.

Owner's manual:

Always try to keep your owner's manual in a handy location. If you have lost it, or never received it, you should be able to download information from the manufacturers website. Each type of generator will have different maintenance instructions and service intervals and you should try to follow them. You should be aware of the type of generator you own. Generators can be two or four cycle and run on gas or diesel. Your manual will provide you the information you need for a two cycle gas and oil mix.

Keep it clean:

When you generator is not in use cover it with a drop cloth. Be sure the generator has cooled before you cover it. Wipe away any oil or gas spills before storage. You do not need to buy a special cover, just cover it to keep dirt and debris out.

Service:

Change the generator oil as often as suggested by the manufacturer. Use the correct type of oil. Change the spark plug and any filters as suggested and keep track of the times you have preformed servicing to prevent you from forgetting.

Gas:

Keep a supply of the correct gas and oil you need for your generator on hand. Fuel stabilizers are available to add to your gas supply to prevent it from deteriorating. You may also add some stabilizer to your generator itself to prevent build up of varnish and gum in the fuel lines unless the manufacturer suggests otherwise.

Run it:

Generators, like any two or four cycle motors, should be run on an occasional basis. You may not need the generator over a long time period but it is advisable to run it for a short period of time every few months. This will help to keep the internal parts oiled and prevent build up in the gas lines. If you have ever tried to start a lawnmower after a period of non-use that was not stored correctly, you will understand the benefit of occasionally running the generator.

Keeping your generator in a ready to use condition is always a good idea. Power failures can occur at any time of year. High winds and ice can knock out power lines and in some cases the power can be out for days. Just ask anyone in southwestern Ohio about the fall of 2008. No one expected a week long failure in a well developed area.
