The first step to getting those locks straight is to use a straightening shampoo and conditioner. The expensive brands at a salon usually work but why shell out that much money? Pantene Pro V makes an extra straight shampoo and conditioner pair. This set works just as well as the expensive counter parts at the salon. It is also great for moisturizing your hair and will cut down on some of the frizz.
When you get out of the shower don't rub your hair with a towel . This will break your strands and cause frizziness. Instead let it air dry then clip your hair up into three separate layers. Using a blow dryer, dry each layer starting with the bottom one. I find that for straightening purposes, using a hair dryer with a brush attachment on it works best.
After you're done blow drying your hair and it is completely dry, put it back into the three layers you had when blow drying. For this next step you will need a straightening iron and will need to iron each of your layers. You can find straightening irons at any major store such as Walmart and also online at sites like E-bay. As far as these straightening irons go, you get what you pay for. If you buy the cheapest one, you will be replacing it after a few months. I suggest spending a little more money and getting one that will last longer.
After straightening your hair with the iron be sure to apply a product to help keep it that way. Try different ones to see what works best with your hair. My favorite to use is pomade. I just work a small glob, about the size of a dime, around in my hands until it is warm then rake it through my hair with my fingers. I have really dry hair so this product works great for me as it doesn't make it look greasy.
If you live in a high humidity area I don't suggest straightening during the summer months. All of your hard work will be reversed almost instantly when stepping outside. Also stay away from water as it too will cause your hair to frizz and turn curly again. Good luck and happy straightening!
