Most people are comfortable sending and receiving emails. Another media that offers tremendous potential is streaming video. Streaming video is video that is played over a network. It differs from video that is played from a file on a local storage medium such as a hard disk or video that is downloaded over a network to local storage media such as a hard disk and then played back from the storage media.
Online video is big business already with billions being spent and that number to grow astronomically in the coming years. Businesses like the fact that they can communicate to their customers both past and present. Friends are now able to keep in touch with each other. Loved ones can communicate things like a new baby or some other life changing experience online rather than just through pictures.
As our lives become more cluttered we have become a visual society. The internet helps keep people's attention and in turn the messages and advertising of a business is easier to remember when we can view it as a video.
Because people only remember 10% of what they read newspaper is becoming outdated. We remember 30% of what we see. We remember 50% of what we see and hear and a staggering 80% of what we see, hear and do. That is the power streaming video is having on the internet.
It is estimated that in the future 100 billion emails will be sent in a day. The majority of these will be from businesses trying to get your attention. As they combine streaming video online with email they will be able to capture your attention by combining what you see, what you hear, with what you do. The desired result will be for their video to get you to go to a website or even make a purchase right from the email itself.
You have probably seen more color in your emails with banners and pictures vying to get your attention. The next step will be to put voices, and body gestures, as the final piece of the puzzle to attract and keep your attention. This is how streaming video is changing and will continue to change the world as we see and hear it.
