How to Make Stress Vanish

How to Relax at the End of a Stressful Day

Melanie Dixon
For anyone who works in customer service, we all know the phrases to make our unhappy customers feel cared for, or we have the resources of our help desk or supervisor. But what to do when at the end of the day we feel stressed over one difficult customer?

First of all, don't hesitate to speak to your manager or one of the managers about the situation. Of course it has happened to all of us, we get home, and our family members ask us what is wrong. Do we really want to unload the situation upon then, or do we want to relax for an hour or so and come to the dinner table feeling reenergized for a pleasant family evening?

It's part of being human dealing with stressful situations from time to time.

See the humor in it. Picture your customer in pajamas at the local coffee shop and how they sold out of decaf. non-fat latte and hence the reason why they are now taking it out on you. Now that is funny!

After a stressful incident, take a deep breath and release. Sometimes that is all that is needed to keep you motivated for the rest of the day. No matter what your career is, we all have to deal with upset customers at one point or another.

Focus on the positive. Later tell someone about an awesome customer you had. Perhaps they told you to have a great weekend, or told you to enjoy the warm weather outside. You know the ones, you remember them at the end of the day.

Have a soothing cup of herbal non-caffeinated tea, perhaps chamomile. They also have relaxing blends you can choose from.

Here's some de-stressing tips. Take ten minutes in a darkened room. Sit down and close your eyes. Imagine you are somewhere quiet and peaceful. Perhaps it is a beach location, or a campground. Focus on relaxing and forgetting the stresses of the day.

Look out the window. Stretch your muscles. Invite your family for a nice walk around the block.

Do you have a pet? Spend some time with them. Pets have been proven to lower our heart rates and live longer and healthier lives. You can only think happy thoughts when stroking their soft fur and they are purring.

If works creeps in, remember that we have bad days too, and are only human. The person at the other end of the telephone may be going through some situation that hopefully we will never encounter. I'm sure they are never like that all the time. Remember how often an unhappy customer has started out irate and then you have turned the situation around and they have thanked you and wished you a great day too.

Stress is all about life. Without it, we wouldn't know how wonderful it feels to go home for rest and relaxation.
